Honors Program vs. Other Schools

I've been accepted to Michigan and the University of Chicago. I'm wondering if the honors program at Michigan is comparable to an experience at UChicago or other elite schools.

Also, is it too late to apply for honors? I heard it was on a rolling basis and I have no idea if a ton of people have applied already.

The Honors program at Michigan is not much different from the rest of the University of Michigan. Not that the Honors program isn’t great, but Michigan as a whole is an elite university. This said,

As for the experience, Michigan is not comparable to Chicago. Though both elite and excellent, those are two very different animals. Michigan is more flexible and well rounded, providing students with a more collegiate atmosphere. Chicago, on the other hand, is socially less active, academically more intense, has a rigid core and has a strong graduate culture, with graduate students outnumbering undergrads by a ratio of 2:1.

Michigan is comparable to Cal, Cornell, Northwestern, Penn and Wisconsin. Chicago is more of an intellectual think tank, similar to Carnegie Mellon, Columbia and Johns Hopkins. All of those universities are elite, but they are not all similar.

And no, it is not too late to apply to the Honors college, but keep in mind that thehonors program is only for the college of LSA (Engineering and Ross do not have honors programs).

That’s what I figured. I’m a humanities/social science guy, so I would definitely do LSA. But my academic interests seem to be pointing me toward Chicago. Thanks though!

Yeah, Michigan vs Chicago is an easy decision because the two schools are so different.

If you’re a good enough writer to have been accepted by UChicago, you should have no problem getting into LSA honors.
