Honors program vs. Regular

Hey I was wondering if colleges look favorably upon higher GPA (Regular non Honors) vs. lower GPA (Honors program) when transferring and what the deviation would be?

Thanks (and this is from a CC)

I believe a slightly lower gpa with honors is preferred. I’m not sure though.

My transfer counselor indicated that typically, a more rigorous courseload (i.e. honors) with a solid GPA is looked upon more favorable than a high GPA with a bunch of low-rigor or fluff courses.

You want your coursework to be as rigorous as possible. If you have the option, try to get out of “intro” classes that will be irrelevant when you transfer.

I don’t know what you mean by fluff (intro courses)?

How about regular courses vs. all Honors with a significantly lower GPA in terms of numbers…
What number would satisfy (regular GPA > Honors GPA?)

Thanks

Take the toughest courses you can. Do as well as you can. That’s the simplest formula for transfer success.

Honors courses always trump regular courses on a transcript. Why are you shooting for the middle?

better GPA in regular?

Unfortunately there is no magic number.

How much of difference are we talking about?

I think we could all safely agree less than a 3.0 with honors courses would be a very bad idea, because at that point it would be pretty obvious that you’re in over your head. I would think a safe range, on the low end, would be anywhere within 3.2 to 3.5, but as the others have said try to get as high a grade as possible.

I’m also not sure how this rates with advice others have received, but my advisor recommended spacing out some of the honors courses simply because most students aren’t able to be 100% devoted to school (families, jobs, etc.) and loading up on a full semester of all honors courses could likely spell disaster. Not to mention that some CCs are limited on their honors course offerings.

I agree with Sundoll. Take on the challenge, but remember to not bite off more than you can chew.

If you can handle Honors, than take the Honors course. If you can’t, do not risk your chances of transferring.
