Hi everyone! I’m applying for Dorms for CP SLO right now and it says that the cerro vista apartments are also called “Honors Housing.” Im guessing that means honors students will be living with honors students. But my question is how do we apply for the honors program? Is there an App or does CP send you an invitation. Also, is the honors program worth it? Basically, what kind of things do we do in there - more hw??(people from the honors program please give me your input).

The website doesn’t specifically say this, but although anyone can apply, I think they do contact certain students and suggest that they apply.

In addition to getting into the Cerro Vista apartments as a freshman, the Honors department sometimes (though not lately) gets separate funding for research so there might be more opportunities in that area in addition to the opportunity to get more homework. :-)

My son decided not to apply for the Honors program until he saw how hard things were. Right now he is in the Honors Calc class. Calc III last quarter and Calc IV this one. He is in it because he had high SAT scores and he was personally contacted/invited to be in it. He chose to go for it because of the great teacher who teaches it (L.Patton) He feels that it goes a bit faster and that a little more is expected of you. Of course the class average is higher too. he said that he wouldn’t have taken Honors if it wasn’t for the great teacher. It really isn’t worth it to him to just have Honors label attached to the class.

He also lives in Cerro, but since he was not designated as an Honors student, he is not grouped near other honor students specifically. he does hang out with some good students though and loves Cerro!

Hope this helped!

If you are an honors student, you do not have to live in cerro, you can still live in any dorm you want. Even if you do live in cerro, it is quite possible that some or even all of your roommates will not be honors students. They hold the honors desserts and stuff in the cerro community center for all honors students though. I heard that the honors program is kind of geared towards mathy sciency stuff (which makes sense given the strengths of the school), but it means that if your are a liberal arts major in the honors program, you may have to take some classes you’re not too interested in. Heard this from a girl I met in one of my classes who was an English major in the honors program. I have no idea about whether or not the honors program gets more funding, but I know that they’ll offer a few sections of certain classes (like comms 101) that are reserved for honors students but they are still quite difficult to get into cause they fill up almost just as fast as the regular sections of the class and there are less of them offered.
