Ok I was on myucla today, and I noticed I was eligible for the honors program at UCLA.

I'm just kind of curious as to what this actually entails; I have gone and looked at the site, but if any current honors students wanted to elaborate that would be awesome.

Not sure of this helps but I'm a poly sci major with pre law

Honors program isn’t really much… basically fill out the app and then you’ll be eligible for honors at graduation which is nice (provided that you stay will the program), and eligible for more scholarships. Also more personal counseling.

The biggest perk I’ve found is being able to check out books for a whole quarter instead of whatever the normal period is for undergrads (like 2 or 4 weeks).

I think the main thing is meant to be the Collegium courses. I haven’t taken any yet, but I’ve heard they can be pretty interesting.

@ThisCouldBeHeavn: I actually went to Powell and asked about their policy on that, and the person working there said they don’t give Honors students special privileges. Did you run into any problems keeping the books for a whole quarter in the past? And does it matter where you checked it out from?

i heard at orientation last year that the honors program had a over 50% drop rate after the second year since students decided it was not worth their time. I believe honors students must receive a grade of B or higher in all their courses (if a student receives a grade lower than that they must retake) and they must take special honors courses as well. Waste of time imo.

dont be hatin if im all wrong.

EDIT: sorry, a B or higher in all Honors courses and a overall GPA of 3.5+ (which averages to just higher than a B)

Hmm, upon consulting my records, it looks like it may be true that College Library books can’t be checked out for extended periods (though you can renew as much as you want if nobody else requests it). Any other library is fine though, and most books aren’t in College Library. Most of the books I get come from EMS or YRL.

I think Honors has such a high drop rate because a lot of people sign up for it at first (almost all admits qualify for entrance) but if your major doesn’t have a lot of honors classes it’s kind of like having a minor that you’re doing on the side, and if it’s not a priority you’re not going to be able to keep up.
