Honors Program

Hey everybody!

I was just wondering if I could get a bit more information about the Honors Program.
I was surprised to find that I was accepted to this program, and then further surprised when the website said "approximately 400 students are enrolled in the Honors Program". Can anyone tell me how accurate this number is? And anything else about the Honors Program, for that matter? I know they have prof dinners, but not much else.

I don’t know much, but I know that you take special honors classes that are pretty difficult to do well in at times. On the other hand, they’re really intellectually stimulating and some of the best GW has to offer. A friend said that at times she felt as if it was impossible to get an A, but also felt that it helped her get into a very competitive law school. So it has its positives and negatives.

If you didn’t get in, does anyone know the likelihood of transferring in sophomore year? And if you didn’t get into the intended area of study you wanted? I applied to Journalism and Mass Comm and didn’t get in. I am thinking of switching to Political Communication if I go to GW, but I don’t see a point in going if I wouldn’t be able to get into that major. Basically, if anyone knows the likelihood of transferring into either the Honors Program or the School of Media and Public Affairs, please let me know!

This is a pretty helpful link: http://www.gwu.edu/learn/undergraduate/undergraduatestudyoptions/universityhonorsprogram

Do you know if you can get into the Honors program if you are accepted off the waitlist? ACT 34, SAT 2260, NMF, 4.0, NHS, etc.

I was rejected from the honors program, but I’m wondering if it will be worth it to apply during freshman year… Are there many people who do this?

@ufl2012:
See the above link-- “Due to the rigor of the coursework involved and focus on the freshman and sophomore years, continuing GW students may not apply for admission.”

Sorry. :(

this is not true - you can apply as a second semester freshman.

JMC vs. PCM
Same school, same tiny enrollment, I would assume not any easier to get into. My D was accepted as a PCM and many classes overlap (all core and some electives). She plans on taking additional journalism skills classes so she is prepared when she graduates. She also wants to do the 5-yr Dual Degree BA/MA program in Media and Public Affairs.

I am a freshman honors student at GW and it is an amazing program. The classes that I have taken so far are definitely challenging but they are incredibly stimulating and the small, discussion based classes are wonderful. There are about 125 Honors students per grade and you will start to get to know many of your fellow honors classmates relatively quickly as you will be attending many of the same events and taking the honors classes together. Right now, most of the honors kids live together in Thurston so there is definitely a community feel to being in the program, but next year, UHP housing is moving to West Hall on Mt Vernon. I’m not sure how that will affect the honors community, but you can decide if you think living on the Vern is a good option for you. Even after all that, I haven’t mentioned the best part of the UHP - the advisers. The honors advisers (Liz and Catherine) are wonderful people who are fun to be around and seem to have a very genuine interest in each kid’s success. They know A LOT about the school and the curriculum and have already helped me several times to prepare for the future (and I’m still a freshman!)

Overall, I’m so glad that I’m in the Honors Program and I can’t imagine life at GW without it… you should definitely join!
