Honors Program

I got an e-mail today inviting me to the Steinhardt Honors Program. Did everyone else get something like this?

Apparently it includes a year-long bi-weekly seminar (not for credit) and an optional freshman colloquium (which you can get credit for).

To those who know a lot more about it, do you think it's a rewarding and worthwhile experience? Does it open the possibility for maybe more scholarships?

I guess I'm looking for more information than what was presented. I suppose I could go and ask these questions when I visit next week but in the meantime who better to ask than the experts at CC? :P

Yeah, I got the same email. Info on the program from someone on cc would be great!

D was just accepted into Steinhardt’s honor program today as well.

Older D was in it and is about to graduate.

First, I have a call into Steinhardt admissions regarding whether it comes with any merit money. I do not believe it will, but it is worth the phone call.

Our EFC is high, so the only way we will get money is if it is pure merit aid. In the past, it did offer merit $, but I doubt it does now.

Even when D got into the program 4 years ago, she did not get any additional money. (She was already receiving a $10K/year merit music scholarship.) Financial aid implied that if she did not already have the music award, that she may have gotten some nominal amount for Scholars. But back 4 years ago, the website said that the scholarship came with merit and need based $. Now it doesn’t.

In terms of the program itself, older D thought it was worthwhile. The seminar was held on Fridays only (not bi-weekly.) There was also a community service component. They discussed topics such as racism.

She felt some lectures were good…some not so much. However, she really liked the opportunity to get to know her fellow scholars. It really let her get to know students outside of her major and some became her close friends.

The best part of the program was the travel options. D went to Austin, Texas as a freshman and to Sicily as a junior. She was scheduled to go to Mexico as a sophomore but opted out since there were many travel warnings to where they were going at the time. (The trip ran without a hitch–but I still feel it was not the best destination.) In the past, there was generally a US trip one year and an International trip the following year. Both Freshman and Sophomores would go on each trip. There was always both a community service and academic component tied to the itinerary and lectures.

As Juniors and Seniors there were several university wide trips that could be taken. Scholars would get first priority, although non-scholars could apply too.

D loved her trip to Italy. Probably a highlight of her time at NYU. The cost to her was $300 for the trip, maybe another $300 in additional expenses.

There are videos up on the scholars page of Austin and maybe Sicily.

Younger D is quite excited to be part of the program!
