Honors Program

Does anyone know anything about it? Are the classes worthwhile? How many kids get invited to join the Honor's College? How is their first year of required classes (humanities classes or something)?

I forgot, also how is honor's college housing? Is it better to go with the honors housing, or regular housing at Hofstra?

Also, how tough is it to get a 3.0 in honors classes? Are they considerably more rigorous than regular Hofstra classes? Want to know in case a 3.0 is required to hold onto a merit scholarship.

I highly doubt that any component of Hofstra would make it difficult to get above a 3.0. Whether or not you or your son/daughter is worried about maintaining such a grade, keep in mind that a slight drop in grades is well worth it. The threat of being crushed by the lack of intellectual pursuit found overall in the student body is very real. You or your son/daughter will need the honors program just to survive.
Yeah, I know, look at me generalize.

Well, not if you lose a scholarship worth thousands of dollars x 4 years. That becomes a financial decision. I am sure you will be challenged there, if you want to be. My son would be a business major. Their business school is supposed to be pretty good.

Are you going to be in the honors college, if you know yet? Do you know anything about it, or the housing for it?

I was just accepted into their honors program, it seems really good.

Can you tell me anything about it? Do you know how many freshmen participate in it? It looks like it is more for someone who was interested in studying English/Humanities, rather than science/math.

Sorry, I am looking for those same questions. It said on my letter that I was chosen out of the top of thousands. but who knows what that means?

My son's said the same thing, so I guess everyone who was invited to the honor's college got the same letter.

Hi! I am a student in HUHC and am happy to answer your questions.

Freshman year you take classes called Culture and Expression (C & E). It involves two discussion classes and a lecture. One of the discussion classes is Humanities focused and the other discussion section is a Social Science focus. The class meets Monday, Wednesday, Friday. On Monday you have a lecture and one of your discussion sections. On Wednesday there is a lecture with the other discussion section. On Friday you meet with both discussion sections. The lecture is made up of all first year HUHC students. The discussion sections are about 20 students. There are 8 different professors each semester. The lectures are given by one of these professors each time. The course consists of reading, writing, and discussion. I loved the class, hated the work, but loved the class. It is definitely worthwhile.

I live in Honors housing and it is definitely the best dorm on campus. It is a small complex so you know everyone. It has such a family atmosphere. The rooms are a nice size with the nicest furniture. We have a courtyard where we have lots of programs planned through the hall council or by the RAs. We had a carnival, a field day, game night, movie night; it's awesome.

I am not quite sure how many students get invited into the honors program, but I know there are about 160 in each class.

Now, the rest of your years at Hofstra will be filled with three types of Honors Classes. There are seminars (you must take one), designated Honors classes, and independantly planned honors classes (INHO). INHOs are great because you can make any class you like an honors class. If you are a math major you can make you math class honors; if you are a music major you can make your music classes honors. All you do is approach the professor and they creat an enriched program of study for that class and then you get honors and regular credit for the class. I think this is great because you can get a more in depth course of study for the classes you love and the things you want to learn more about.

About the GPA, I think it should be relatively easy to maintain a 3.0. For Honors college you must maintain a certain GPA to continue in the Honors program. For freshman 3.2, sophomores 3.3, and juniors 3.4.

I hope this has helped you understand some more about HUHC. It is a great program, not just for academics. It is a community with fun events that help you grow as a human being. I LOVE HUHC!!!!

sk8nlassie, Thank you for your help. Sounds like you are enjoying your time at Hofstra!

TAKE DR. JOHAN AHR if you decide to go into Honors College.
