see, i dont understand this.. why do they pick honors kids on SAT or ACT scores, and not actual classes they have taken in school, class ranking, and the rigor of academic work they completed in high school... this is crap! I most definately didn't study my ass off just to make a high score on the SAT or ACT.. i just took it.. if i wanted to study, or even cared about my score, i could have gotten much higher, but i didnt think that they would pick an ACADEMIC HONORS program based on stupid standardized test scores.... ugh

I think it is based on the entire application including GPA, rigor of curriculum, SAT scores, and rank.
Remember if Hnors is importat to you you ca apply after you start at BU based on your GPA there.

Yeah thats exactly what I'm going to do.. you'd think they would see a Valedictorian as "honors material".... how else do you become valedictorian if you don't take Honors and AP level courses?? DUH

peppercody,
Its a huge number of applications to go through in a short period of time so I'm wondering if your situation "fell through the cracks". Have you emailed the head of Honors to ask if perhaps there was an oversight given your profile since I'm assuming if you are your class Val. that you have a high GPA and scores? If you aready called admissions it may hae been in the thick of the last month when these places are going crazy so you may get more attention now.

Nah I havent e-mailed anyone yet.. I'm not really mad.. I was just kinda surprised is all.. I looked at some of the honors courses, and none of them really interested me so I don't think I'm gonna appeal this year. I will wait until sophomore year and by then I will have talked to people who are actually in the program to know whether I would like it or not... but at least an offer would have been nice.. it was just a hit to the ego lol

i got invited and my SATS were only 2000, but i have a 4.7 GPA and am 1st in my class

what are the advantages of being in honors besides the classes? does it say "honors" on your diploma or something?

No biggie. Its not on your diploma just your transcript but you can add it to a resume or grad/law school application.

is there a lot of extra work involved?

^ According to BU, there's really not much extra work involved. You just get like special seminars and stuff, trips, etc. I can't remember everything they said but it didn't sound half bad. I got into the SMG honors program so I don't know what the CAS one is like.

In my Honors classes they had an extra meeting of just the Honors kids with the Professor and it involved smaller more in-depth discussion and a little advanced reading. Most of the trips are optional since they are social type enrichment. I know Astronomy HOnors goes to some special observatory though. It really depends which class you choose. You can email the Professor and ask what he plans to do with the Honors section. The rest of the time you are in the regular components of the class.
