So I’ve looked at the website and phoned the school but still don’t have a good feel for what the honors program offers. I know that the school offers some honors classes in various subjects, but it sounds like many of the classes kids in the Honors Program will need to take are not, in fact, honors classes. Can anyone add any more information to that which is already available on the website? On another note, I am very troubled with the amount of drinking and substance abuse that seems to go on with students at this school. I perused the school newspaper and saw that 5 students died this year from alcohol and drug use. This is very alarming and makes me question whether this is the right school for my child. Does anyone know anything about the school’s drug and alcohol policy? Thanks everyone.
There are not honors sections in every class. They release the list of available honors sections each semester. Honors classes generally are a little faster and more in depth than regular classes but not having an honors class doesn’t mean you aren’t challenged.
As far as drinking and drug use, I don’t think Miami is worse than any other college. It’s there and if a kid is inclined to dabble in those pursuits, they will find it at any school.
My D is freshman in Honors program at Miami U. Honors program does seem to be evolving. She had a great experience with her honors cluster classes this past fall. Her honors stats class this semester was cancelled due to low enrollment, but she was able to get into a 300 level applied stats class based on her strong calculus background. Honors program will allow her to get OOS credit for European trip this summer waived. She has extra advising and flexibility. We are really happy with choice of Miami. As far as drugs, alcohol, I think you find it everywhere, even in honors dorm. She has met a lot of kids really dedicated to success in school, and that is what we were looking for without the price tag of a more exclusive liberal arts college. Great academic opportunities here. Now to find a similar place for D#2 who is currently a HS junior. Another Miami plus - we are in Chicago area and bus service for breaks has been super helpful instead of 12 hr RT.
@owl1700 thank you very much for your response. This is so helpful.
Thank you, too, Walker1194.
