Honor's Program

Any one find out if they got in. Can someone expound a little more on their program. Its a little vague, even on thier website.

I received my acceptance letter from the Honors Program on Monday. The website doesn't provide a lot of information and I'd love to learn more as well. If you decide to enroll, you will probably find out more about it during the freshman orientation.

I think the only thing that annoyed me was that it isn't put on your transcript. You just get a certificate. I wonder what the difference is between departmental honors and the honors program itself. Oh well, I may join in as well, found out I got in on Monday as well, though it doesn't seem like an accomplishment.

I don't think the honors program at TCNJ is as big a deal as it is in other colleges. Like I know at rutgers and penn state, its almost like an elite club where you get your own dorms and curriculum. At TCNJ, all it means is just taking a few special classes.

I'm a senior at TCNJ, and I'm also in the honors program. You're right that it isn't like the honors programs at schools like Rutgers and Penn State. It is essentially like picking up a minor. You choose five or more classes from the program that you take over the course of your four years here, some of which have to fulfill certain requirements. The classes are usually inter-disciplinary classes on very specific, occasionally obscure subjects. The faculty that teaches these classses are among the best on campus, the classes themselves are very small and discussion-oriented, and the work is generally more challenging, not in 'i have tons of work to do' sort of way, but 'hmm, this is really making me think' sort of way. There are also sometimes honors sections of 'regular' classes that you can take. My first year seminar for example was offered as both honors and non-honors, I took honors and we had a smaller class, some extra reading and a more difficult paper topic. The honors program is a great way to ensure that you will get to take some really interesting and challenging classes while you're at TCNJ.

As for people wondering about departmental honors, the difference is that departmental honors is not a program that you apply to like the honors program. I don't know about all of the majors, but to receive departmental honors in the english department you're gpa needs to be above a certain level and then you can elect to write a senior honors thesis. If you do this, you're thesis is awarded either honors, high honors, or highest honors and this distinction will appear on your diploma, unlike the honors program. There are also numerous other ways to get honors at college, such as being invited to join golden key which is offered to the top 15% of the class, or phi kappi phi which goes to the top 1% of juniors and top 7% of seniors, or the individual honor socities for departments. All of these honors will get you honor cords to wear at graduation and certificates saying you were involved, if that's what you're looking for.
