Honors Program?

DS was not accepted into honors.
What is benefit of honors?
How do they decide on honors?
Can he get in later if he desires?

This one gets asked every year. It is supposed to be holistic, top percentage of applicants. The biggest benefit is the nice freshman digs (East Village the last few years). He can apply to join after first semester or second semester, but would need to be 4.0 and would not get to move to EV if accepted. My daughter had one friend who joined after being at the school. I think he did do honors housing later on (not freshman) but the difference in housing after freshman is not significant (usually a WV dorm but most of those are similar).

Northeastern has an Honors Program not an Honors College
like some schools. Other benefits aside from housing include smaller freshman honors section of courses and preferred registration for Dialogues of Civilization courses. In the past a few Dialogues were open only to Honors students.

My student is a sophomore at NU. We too were hung up on the honors thing when they were first accepted and couldn’t understand why it was not offered. We quickly got over it as frankly everyone has amazing stats and scores just to be accepted. Personally, I think NU should look at phasing this distinction out just as other highly selective schools do as it probably does more harm than good. How do they even split hairs to decide who gets in when everyone is amazing?

My student has had no issues not being in honors and does not feel like they are missing anything. When you look at the average admitted student’s stats, and the stats of students accepted into honors, there is not a difference. Basically everyone accepted has leadership, deep and varied EC, and crazy high stats. Honestly, the only real perk is better housing options…

Very much in agreement with everyone here, especially @Annie4321

I agree, I bet they get rid of the Honors Program in the near future. My daughter is an Honors freshman in CS this year and I couldn’t for the life of me tell you why she was selected over others I’ve seen mentioned here.

The only reason I’m annoyed at D20 not getting honors is the better merit aid - she got about 1/2 of what the kids offered honors get. That extra $15k per year would have been really helpful.
