Does anyone know what the minimum requirements are to get into the Honors Program. If not, does anyone know, from personal experience, what "seems" to be good enough to get in?

doubleplay: I really think they look at how rigorous your course load was in high school and how well you did in those courses. I also think they place a lot of emphasis on your application essays. I'm sure test scores are of value, but I suspect they look more at h.s. course load/grades, and they definitely look seriously at the essays. Sorry I can't be of more specific help.

Does anyone know how many are admitted to the Honors program per year?

From the UNC website:

"...some 200 accepted applicants to the university are selected each spring to begin Honors work during their first semester in college..."

It's veryy competitive, and many spots go to out-of-state students, generally because the admitted OOS applicants have out-of-this-world stats and extracurriculars.

It's nice, though, that any student can take honors classes if there are spaces open. Also, many people apply for honors once they are at Carolina rather than as entering freshmen.

leah377: In fact, I think the breakdown for those selected for honors is about even for in-state and out-of-state students. I saw it listed somewhere once, but can't find it now. Here's a link, however, that shows the stats of the 2005 entering freshmen class; the breakdown/comparison between in-state and out-of-state is shown only for the SAT scores, I think, but still . . . you might find it illuminating:

Does anyone know if one can apply to honors program as an incoming junior transfer student?

mkm - I am pretty sure the Honors Program will only accept new people during their freshman and sophomore years (ref: link)

thanks duke. At least they can still take the classes if openings are available.

I am a sophomore Honors student at Carolina, so I'll try my best to give you some information. Of the Honors students I know, approximately half are out-of-state and half in-state. SAT scores and grades play a large role - most of my friends in the program were in the top 5% of their class and had SAT scores at around 1500 or higher (old SAT). Community involvement, strong essays and extracurriculars also help, and if you're selected as a Robertson or Carolina Scholar then you're admitted into the Honors program automatically. Keep in mind that out of the 3000 or so freshmen admitted every year, only around 200 get into the Honors program - so the competition's pretty stiff.
If you don't get in to the Honors program as a freshman, then I strongly suggest applying for your sophomore year. One of my friends did well at UNC his freshman year and was admitted as a sophomore. Even non-Honors students can take Honors classes, though Honors students get priority in registration. The Honors classes I've taken at Carolina have all been amazing, and I suggest that every student try to take at least one during his or her time at UNC.
Wow... I didn't mean to write so much. I'm in the Writing program here... I can't help it. ;-)

What's the writing program like? Is it creative writing?

Yeah, I'm pursuing a creative writing minor at Chapel Hill (there's not a major). It's a great program!
