honors program

i got an honors program thing in the mail today but i thought that we weren't supposed to find out about whether we got in the honors program until march or april. did anyone else get this? is it an application or an acceptance into the program? it just says "invitation". also, how many (or what percentage) of admitted freshman get accepted into the program?

Charmedone -

I think I read somewhere there are usually about 200 incoming freshman in the Honors Program. About four years ago, when my sister was looking at schools, someone in the Honors Program told my mom on the phone that there was sort of an SAT cutoff of 1450 before someone is considered to be invited into the Honors Program, although "officially," of course, they wouldn't really admit that, although lots of schools do openly give minimum SAT scores for admittance to honor programs.

There is a great website with a lot of facts and figures about last year's (2004) freshman class. It says that there were 9 students with SAT score of 1600, 146 with scores in the 1500's, and 589 with scores in the 1400's. So it seems to me if you are in the 1500's or above, you would definitely be in the Honors Program, and then it would drop into the higher 1400 range.

I got accepted to the honors program today as well. I am so freakin excited...woohoo. Anyways the honors decisions werent supposed to come out for about another two weeks...it was the scholarship decisions that arent coming out til around april 1st. BTW my Sat was 1460

awesomeness. congrats! i, too, pass the 'cutoff' with a 1540. i'm all excited now :D

it seems like they would most likely put everyone that has >=whatever SAT in a pile and then look at things like GPA, essays, etc at that point. However, when you do the math the acceptance percentage of honors people is actually higher than you may think 200/4000*= 5%

*estimated rounding up

congrats charmedone and maybe I will see you at one of the overnight thingies

Lovely, I'm a whopping 20 points below this hypothetical cutoff, and I didn't get anything in the mail. Oh well. Do you guys know if it's possible to apply for the Honors Program after freshman year?

yep, my friend that goes to unc did that. i think you can even apply for second semester of freshman year.

Shweeeeeet

I wonder what percentage of people accepted into the honors program also receive merit based scholarships? anyone?

From the Office of Scholarship and Student Aid at UNC Chapel Hill FAQ page:

What is the typical academic profile of a scholarship recipient at UNC-Chapel Hill?

Since scholarship criteria vary depending on the scholarship, awards are not subject to a minimum SAT score or class rank. Because of the limited number of scholarship awards, and given the selectivity of the University, competition for scholarships is very stiff, and recipients automatically tend to be at the top of their high school classes and have very high SAT scores. For example, the average SAT combined score for Carolina Scholars is 1520.

http://studentaid.unc.edu/studentaid/faq/ssa_scholarship_faq.html

Whoops, forgot this other fact from that same Scholarship FAQ website page:

How many academic scholarships are available?

Approximately 100 academic scholarships are given annually to qualified incoming freshmen.

So if you're one of 200 invited into the Honors Program already, and they award "approximately 100 academic scholarships," then it must improve your chances for merit aid, I would think. No?

Scholarship winners will be notified in early March, and they will receive strong consideration for the University’s Honors Program.

It appears that a student could be in the Honor's program, and not receive a scholarship, and the reverse also. But the above statement almost sounds like scholarship winners are announced before Honors selection is done?

Chocoholic: Yes, I had previously read what you just quoted above, and that's the sense I got.. not sure--really just guessing here--but it seems that those who have already been invited into the Honors Program, just this week, are applicants who were accepted EA and who look very good and that UNC would like to have as students. So I'm guessing they invite some of these students into Honors early, and then hold back some of those 200 spaces for any scholarship winners, too? That's not to say, of course, that those already invited Honors students can't be scholarship winners as well. Does that make sense?

Jack
That's exactly how I see it.

I got a 1360 on my SAT and i got invited to join the program... so obviously there are other, more important factors involved.

congrats....i'm glad to hear that Sat isnt the only thing....BTW when did you get your letter?

pouts

I want an honors letter! I haven't gotten one... I'm still hoping, though. I just got my Explore Carolina invitation in the mail today. I got excited until I realized what it was... :)

nckid101, what high school do you go to in Charlotte? I go to Independence.

I got the package on Friday Feb 11. However, the actual letter was dated Feb 8, 2005. I also received a "special invitation" insert along with the Explore Carolina invitation.

nckid101P:

Maybe your Hispanic background helped with making the Honors Program cut. I really don't think most people with similar SAT's should expect an invite. Just don't want people to get their hopes up.

In any case, congratulations!!!
