Honors program?

I couldn't seem to find out how the Honors program works at UW. Is it something where your application for admission counts are your application for Honors (like UMN)? Is it a separate application? Is Honors available to freshman, or only older students?

Here is their website - lots of good information here:
<a href="http://www.honors.ls.wisc.edu/%5B/url%5D">http://www.honors.ls.wisc.edu/</a></p>

"Beginning with students applying to the university for admission in the Fall of 2008, all students admitted to the university and to the College of Letters and Science will be invited to apply to be considered for admission to the Honors Program to pursue the Honors in the Liberal Arts degree. Interested students will be able to apply via an on-line application form on our website.

The invitation message students receive by e-mail will contain the URL to our on-line application. Students who do not have e-mail and/or internet access will receive an invitation letter by mail that will include directions to contact our office by phone at (608) 262-2984 to request a hard copy application. Full consideration will be given to applications received by early March of each year. A specific deadline will be provided in the invitation message or letter. Admission to the program is competitive, and space is limited. We regret that not everyone who applies at this first opportunity will be accepted."

It goes on to say that if you don't get into honors as a freshman, you will have other opportunities later on.

hmm, i just found out that school of education students can't do honors their first year... i hope that won't put me at a disadvantage in the work world if I do end up switching my major. Anyone know some more about honors and its importance?

You do an honors program to get the toughest/best courses, to make yourself work harder/learn more. It is not just about putting something on a cv/resume, it is about you getting the most you can out of your college academics.

ya, i caught on to that, but seeing as I don't get that option of first-yr honors anyways i'd prefer if u didn't point out all its perks, lol (don't mean to sound mean, just kinda sad to miss out of honors)

muzicgirl, can you do "honors in the major?" It wouldn't be your freshman year, but after you started taking education classes.

You can join a FIG, or a number of other groups. Don't worry that not having honors your freshman year will somehow lessen your college resume!

Oregonianmom, that link is for the College of Letters and Sciences and I was accepted to the College of Engineering. From what I read, it sounds like there may not be an Honors program for Engineering yet?

Individual engineering departments are in the process of developing and offering honors programs for high-ability students enrolled in their majors. Students in these programs will plan and conduct engineering research projects under the guidance of faculty members.
