Honors Program

I got an invitation to apply to the Honors Program at TCNJ. I didn't know that they had one. Can anyone tell me what they know about it?

All I know is it's very respectable, and honor students get housed in Cromwell Hall which is a very nice dorm... Go for it

I would also be interested in hearing from anyone currently in the Honors Program at TCNJ. D received an invitation to apply yesterday and doesn't appear too interested. Are the classes much more difficult than the regular ones? Do you really feel you are getting something extra out of them? Are there any perks to being in the program such as early registration, special housing or special field trips as we have seen with Honors Programs at other colleges? Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer.

When is the deadline to apply? The letter said just to send everything in ASAP

The application said they would only consider your application if all the materials (application, essay and recommendation letters) were postmarked by April 15.

o ok i didn't notice that, thanks

I received my admission letter the other day but there was no honors program application. I got a full ride though. Does this mean I'm not allowed to be in the honors program? Is there any way I can change this?

I got my honors application a little while after i was accepted, so you will probably get it in the mail in the coming weeks

Nice. (: Thank you!

Hi everyone! I actually just created a thread about the honors program without realizing another one existed, oops! But I mind as well post my question here as well. Has anyone received an acceptance or any notification at all yet? Also, did anyone attend the session at the Accepted Student's Day today? If so, did you learn any important or interesting information about the program? Lastly, I know that the letter stated it was advantagous to apply promptly but do you think they will still consider applications received around this time?? Thanks very much for any information/advice you can give!!!

Well, I hope they do consider applications sent around this time because I'm a procrastinator and I probably won't have mine in until April 15th. xDD

I'm pretty sure they weigh everybody the same until you toe that April 15th line. I find it highly unlikely that they'd weigh in when you sent it in. Because some people applied earlier than others, right? That would give them an unfair advantage.

Will they still accept applications after April 15th? Because I just got the letter today and will be on spring break this week (we have the week before easter off, rather than the one after) so I might not get a chance to ask teachers for reccomendations.

clever_name I believe the invite says that in order to guarantee they’ll look at your application it has to be postmarked by April 15…to me that sounds like they might look at applications after the 15th but you never know…I would try calling and explain to them your situation it doesn’t seem fair if you only received the invite 2 days ago

Thanks, HazelEyes, I’ll try that. :-)

you’re welcome! hope to see you there!

If you’re considering TCNJ’s honors program, what other colleges are you considering? I’m trying to decide whether UVA and Duke are worth the money, considering the great price of TCNJ. I’m also waitlisted at Harvard, Priceton and Penn. I’d bet most honors candidates are getting a merit aid at TCNJ as well.

There are some questions in this thread that went unanswered so I thought I’d put in my two cents. I’m a rising senior at TCNJ and have been a part of the Honors Program since my freshman year. Unfortunately, I have to disappoint all of you. There are no real perks to being in the program. No early registration, or special housing. I believe that freshman year, most honors FSP students are put together to live in Cromwell, instead of the Towers. This might be considered a perk, since the set-up of rooms in Cromwell is slightly more “upscale” than in the Towers, but it is probably the only perk I can think of. There are very few “honors” classes offered each semester. While the school requires you to take only 5 of them to graduate from the program, the choices are limited and you often find yourself taking a class that you have no interest in just to satisfy the requirement. The classes are not at all more difficult than regular classes at TCNJ, so it does not make a difference at all. You are also give an option of completing one regular class “by contract” (to satisfy the 5 honors classes requirement), meaning that you and the class instructor agree that you will do an additional project for the class to “raise it up to honors level”. This, however, results in you doing more work for the class that you normally would have in a class, and since there is virtually no difference between an honors and a regular class, you would have been better off just taking an “honors” class to begin with. But then again, as I’ve mentioned before, there are few interesting honors classes offered…

I am not trying to discredit TCNJ or the program, I just feel that it is not as prestigious as it appears to be, or makes itself out to be, to the applicants. Just thought I would put it out there… Any more questions, I will gladly answer them.
