Does UMich even have an honors program? And if so, how do you apply for it? I didn't see anything about it on the application...

Honors - University of Michigan

this has useful information :)

Hi galestorm!

Yes Michigan does have an honors program ... you do not apply for it necessarily. If you have the credentials, you are automatically invited. Normally, admitted students into the Honors College have an ACT score of 32-34, SAT score of about 1380-1490, and UM-UW GPA of 3.8-4.0. If you fall short of these credentials, you can also write an essay and send more credentials to show interest in the program.

You can find info about the Honors College at LSA's website here: Honors - University of Michigan.

I hope this information helps, and good luck!

wow the essay questions are pretty unique and in depth

ihatesats2, you have a very good chance of being invited.

If you are invited, do you still have to apply and write the essays?

I recently received a letter offering to apply to the honors program, and my question is if everyone is invited to apply or is it selective as to who is even offered to apply?
Essentially, is it an "honor" to be offered the right to apply or is everyone emailed saying to apply to the honors?

just found the answer to my own question from the umich website but for anyone else that is interested:

Any student who has been admitted to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts may apply to the Honors Program. Honors does search for students whose UM applications strongly indicated that they are well suited for our an especially challenging and stimulating academic environment and invites these students to apply to the Program. Our initial screening of admissions data, however, can only tell us so much about a student's focus and engagement. If you are the kind of student who seeks out academic challenges and has a strong desire to be part of a vigorous intellectual community, you should apply to Honors whether we send you an invitation or not, so that we can fully consider how well the Honors Program would match your interests and goals.

If you are going to apply without being invited,( or even if you are) make sure to write an excellent essay. A friend of ours who had a wonderful high school record and thought himself a shoo-in did not get invited (probably due to 31 ACT score) He wrote a so-so essay, thinking it was no big deal - got rejected. He didnt' give up and after writing another essay and much effort and conversation with the honors director, he finally got in. So don't think you can blow off the essay if there is anything the least bit weak in your record.

Did you receive your Honors Program invitation with your U-M acceptance packet? My son was accepted to U-M a couple days ago via email; we await the snail mail package. Or, does a separate letter come directly from the Honors Program? If so, how many days after U-M acceptance did you receive the invite?

Engineering school does have an honors program called Engineering Global Leaders program(EGL). This program allows you to get a masters degree in engineering in 5 years combined with core business courses and cultural courses. You apply beginning of sophomore year, and need to have 3.6 gpa or higher.

i received the honors invite via email. I am not sure how soon after the LSA acceptance, perhaps about a week, maybe sooner.

I posted this in a different thread, but I did call the Admissions Office yesterday to inquire about how/when a student receives an invitation to the Honors Program. I was told that it did NOT come with the initial admissions packet and would be sent 2-3 weeks later in a separate letter. Glad you didn't have to wait that long.
