Honors Program

Can anyone give me any insight about The University of Virginia's Honors program?

We don’t have an honors program like other universities because the incoming class is so strong.
There is a special Echols Scholars program offered to the best of the best with admission, you cannot apply. Search for details on that. There are not separate honors sections for just Echols kids for intro classes like at other honors departments, it is mostly used for priority registration now.
There are departmental honors for those who keep their GPA above 3.4/3.6, but are specific to each major, search the UVA site for more information on the Distinguished Majors Programs.
There are certain honors sections of classes (CS 101E, Calc III Honors) but they are open to everyone.

Now there is another thing entirely called Honor at UVA, it is our Honor Code which says we cannot lie cheat or steal or else you get expelled from the University pending a trial. Even get caught cheating non-trivially on a homework assignment, if they can prove it and a jury convicts you with that proof you are expelled. I believe the website is at virginia.edu/honor

Finally if you are applying to the engineering school there is a Rodman’s Scholars program like Echols except there are special classes. There is also something called the College Science Scholars. I’m pretty sure they work the same as Echols in that you do not apply but are accepted upon admission to the university. Though those programs do have special seminars I believe.

Well, to add onto hazelorb’s comprehensive post, you can apply to the Echols program after your first semester in college. Be prepared to show some amazing grades, strong extracurricular involvement, and one of a kind essays.

Yes, College Science Scholars is invitation-only. From the web page:

Overview

College Science Scholars is an enrichment program for exceptional students overseen by the chairs of the departments of Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology.
Program Description

Unlike the situation found at most large research universities, the program is designed to give each student individual attention and close interaction with research faculty. Scholars have a senior faculty member serving as their advisor-mentor from the very beginning of their program of study. All participants have the opportunity to become a member of a research lab or group as early as the first semester so that advanced research experience can begin quickly. During the first year, all scholars enroll in the CSS seminar (both fall and spring semesters), where they meet internationally-renowned science faculty from each of the participating departments, hear talks on issues in the forefront of science, and visit research laboratories, etc.

Choosing a Major

College Science Scholars usually choose a traditional major in a department. However, the program also encourages multidisciplinary education. For example, students may follow interdisciplinary tracks, majoring in topics such as Biophysics, Biochemistry, Astrophysics, and Neuroscience.
Admission

There is no application form; students are selected based on information contained in their applications for admission.
