Honors Program

Is is difficult to get into an honors program at UT? Also, what are the honors dorms like? Thanks!

In all reality it depends on which honors program you apply for. I got into LAH but got turned down for Plan II. And the honors dorms aren’t the “social” dorms in the slightest (like there are more shut-ins here than I’ve seen at my friends dorms) but in regards to the facility its not bad actually, Andrews and I think Blanton underwent huge renovations over summer so their better now. IDK about Carrothers though, but anyway all three are still better than Jester but not as good as San Jac or Duren. The location of the Honors quad is also a whole lot better than other dorms well at least the 21st St. dorms because they are closer to a lot of the action on West Campus (party central for us underage frosh that can’t get in on 6th St… because their mostly 21+).

The only benefit that the honors dorms have is location. You are closer to west campus and you are close to Kinsolving, which actually serves breakfast unlike J2.

are the dorms like really quiet? like i dont want to be surrounded by non social people

This honors dorm thread is good:

Thanks all!

YES! These dorms are really quiet which is good for studying, but not for much else…if you want a social life make friends with people from the 21st St. dorms or the other north campus dorms (whitis, kinsolving, duren, and littlefield), and if not those then you can always rush and pledge a fraternity/sorority…

Okay, how about if you don’t live in the quad and haven’t lived in the quad you should wait to share your opinion until you’ve done it.

The Honors Quad (made up of Carothers, Andrews, and Blanton) is an awesome living community. I think last year i think we even got some award for having the most active RHC (Residence Hall Council) meaning that the quad hosted great events for its residents. Sure, there are people who really want to study and who seem less social, but honestly each of the honors programs has such a sense of community that everyone ends up being social at least within their program. There are constantly events to meet people at and there is always somewhere quiet to study. (Also last year’s changes to Blanton greatly improved the dorm; the changes in Andrews that happened this year are from what I can tell unnoticeable.) If the Quad wasn’t at least fun to live in, I wouldn’t have chosen to live here again. Feel free to message me if you have any specific questions!

Also, I can’t see if anyone addressed your first question. You apply for the honors programs when you apply to the school. There is a separate application for each program. More information about each of the programs can be found here: [Honors | Freshmen | Be a Longhorn](Applying for Honors - University of Texas Admissions)

San Jac and Duren are “nicer” in a sense that you can have your own bathroom, but I think the Quad DOES have a social environment. I heard that they throw a lot of parties, if thats what you’re into. Apparently last year, during dead week, some people in ABC threw a party in the elevator and broke it!

There are not parties IN the quad, but a few honors programs (which I wont name) are known for throwing awesome parties in west campus.

The elevator breaking and the party on the elevator were not proved to be correlated events.

Also, I lived across from the elevator last year in Andrews and was up early (4 am?) to catch a flight home. I hear a noise outside my door and see some boys from the dorm had moved a table and chairs from a sun deck on to the elevator and were now stealing posters (mostly old signs about campus events) from our hallway and posting them in the elevator. The honors kids know how to have fun, be clever, and do well.

I’m an RHC rep, and I love where I’m living.

It’s nice being so close to the people in your program (I’m plan II/bhp), and ABC RHC really is active in trying to setup events to let students have a good time if only by giving them something to have a good time making fun of.

We are on West Campus and I’m always meeting up with friends at Carothers to go out and eat on the drag from, or heading over to the Student Union which is not a bad walk at all from here, or if all else fails and you want to “party” we’re way closer to all the Frat Houses and West Campus apartments where, yes, all of the underaged action is. But, you should definitely have a great time without that.

Of course some people are anti-social (I mean, come on, engineering honors students live here ;-p), but like the rest of the school it depends on your roomie and your major. I’ve never had any trouble being up or out with friends till McGriddles seemed like our best meal option, even with engineers.

Thanks for the good info. Since I have some replies from people who are involved in the honors program I am going to take advantage and ask a few more questions. More details from me…I am inquiring for my daughter who is a HS senior now. She does not know what she wants to major in yet, so which honors program would be best for someone in her situation. About the honors dorms…she does not drink but is very social and likes to have fun with friends. We live out of state and she thought the honors dorms might make the campus seem a bit smaller and she might be around people more like her.

pecos - The honors dorms would be a good spot for her. A Residential FIG would also be a very good housing option!

The honors dorm is definitely a good experience. There are a wide variety of kids that live here. Some lock themselves in their dorm and are very anti-social. Some go out to parties every night. A good amount of kids go out and drink on weekends. There are lot’s of events that you can use to make friends hosted by the awesome RHC. Upperclassmen tend to be extremely friendly to us freshman. Location is great. Right next to the drag. Right next to west campus, where all the parties are. Close to engineering buildings (that’s good for me at least). Close to FAC/Tower. Close to the union. I am really enjoying my experience so far and would recommend it to any incoming freshman in an honors program.

what is the rhc ?

Also, what is a residential FIG?

does anyone know how they do roomates in the honors quad?
like a survery or is it pot-luck?

pecos-it seems like im like your daughter, i dont like to drink either but i still like to have fun and am very socail so i wasnt sure if the honors dorm would be good, but it seems like a good fit! im a senior to so maybe ill see your daughter next year!

RHC is a Residential Hall Council, basically they put on stuff for the entire dorm to have fun and come together as a hall.

You either pick your own roommate over facebook by using the UT housing roommate matcher or UT housing put you with someone potluck/randomly based on when you registered for housing and what your dorm choices were. UT Housing does not try to match people with similar sleeping or partying or housekeeping (for example) habits.
