I've heard that all students invited to the Scholarship Day are accepted into Chapel Hill's honors program. Is that so? Also, what sort of benefits accompany this honors designation?

^^ that’s definitely not true. check out the unc admissions blog, it talks about it all on there…they are two separate things…

That isn’t true, but it is very rare for someone to be invited to Scholarship Day and not be invited to the honors program. Also, it is very possible to be admitted to the Honors Program without receiving a scholarship.

As far as benefits, being in the program gives you first shot at taking Honors classes. It also gives you the option of rooming with an Honors room-mate. There isn’t separate honors housing per se, but Cobb does house a lot of kids in the Honors Program. Finally, being in the Honors Program DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU GRADUATE WITH HONORS! I can’t emphasize that enough. Anyone can graduate with honors if they do an honors thesis.

Not getting into the Honor’s Program isn’t the end of the world either. I didn’t get in, and was honestly was kind of upset about it. I got over it, came here anyway, and haven’t looked back since. You can apply for admission during the second semester of your freshman year or first semester of your sophomore year. I applied and was accepted, but took Honor’s classes before being a part of the program.

I second what packerfan says. I’ve known plenty of people who didn’t go to Carolina because they didn’t get into Honors. That’s just silly - if you do well in your classes the first semester, you can get in, and that’s the end of it. They really just use it as a recruitment tool.
