Are the honors classes really just "more enriching" or are they considerably harder and more time-consuming?

It depends on the individual class. I’ve heard from people that the earlier honors classes are completely different but not necessarily harder. They meet at different times, have different test formats/requirements etc…
Later on, it’s just a couple of students in a class along with everyone in the regular section and you may have to do an extra assignment or presentation so it varies.

I’m in the honors program and I have taken a significant amount of honors classes. To me, most the the honors courses have been ‘easier’. They tend to involve less tests, memorization of material, tedious assignments, etc and more discussion, papers, and projects. However, I did have one honors class that was significantly more difficult than the regular (we used a more difficult text and an extra text compared to the regular sections). I am currently writing my honors thesis, so I only meet with my adviser when needed.

Pierre is a bit incorrect on upper-level honors courses. There are some upper level honors in each major, but not many. As a result, some students have to supplement not having an honors course by adding an assignment(s)/project to the regular section. An honors student must always be enrolled in an honors course, and this allows them to be enrolled in honors while not taking meaningless courses. If you plan well, this shouldn’t be a problem for you.

Overall, I have enjoyed being in honors.

Mitch: Good to see you on here! Somehow your site has been hijacked and lots of us miss your advice. But we do appreciate all of the work you have done on here for years! So thank you!

Is an honors thesis eventually required?

haha my bad, I should probably give Mitch his site back, facebook keeps me busy enough lol

I believe that you are only required to complete a thesis if you are in departmental honors, not sure if general honors have to complete a thesis

I’ve been lurking here less often as I’ve been focusing on grad school, hockey season (we were 5th in the south this year for ACHA DIII), and some academic developments here (math minor, some departmental awards). Also, Pierre has been doing a good job on keeping you all updated. I try to chime in when I can offer a unique perspective. You can always PM me with any questions.

An honors thesis is required for departmental honors (for all of the departments I know of). However, a lot of students will stay with honors for the ‘better’ classes, earlier sign up times, social opportunities (tickets), etc. and drop when they are required to do a thesis.

Clemson14 - looks like you’re majoring in accounting too? Maybe we can be room mates :)

Anyway, what are departmental honors? Are there sections or something?

only if you’re cute :)

Departmental Honors is a more specific honors program within your major (normally involves some research and writing a thesis I believe) instead of just taking general honors classes.

Trust me, I am :)

oh yeah? prove itttt

haha this is funny :)

Sent a picture :)

Anyway, looks like there’s no thesis required for accounting. Looks like I made out easy

haha lucky accounting majors

can’t wait to see you :)

But being in the departmental honors program is not required of honors students, correct? You can go through all four years taking one honors class a semester and that’s the end of it?

If you want to get an honors degree, you need to either be in the departmental or general honors. General honors requires that you take at least 6 honors classes so you could go through all 4 years taking one honors class a semester if you wanted to.

Anyone heard back after the first round of acceptances yet?
