I received an invitation to apply to the honors college today. It says in the letter that is it very competitive and that less than 10% of the freshman class is admitted.

But what percent of the incoming class received an invite to apply?

Basically, I'm asking once invited to apply, how many of the people who apply end up getting accepted? Will I most likely get in, or are the chances not great?

The Admissions Office forwards to the Honors Program the list of applicants who scored 1300 or higher on the SATs (Math and Verbal) and graduated in the top 15% of their high school classes. These students are then invited to apply to the Honors Program. From the applicants we select about 125, or about 10% of the total entering class.

So a 1300 is around average now for a TCNJ student. Therefore, that’s around 600 students not taking into account those who got a 1300+ but aren’t in the top 15% of their class. Probably at least 100 of those don’t want to apply or forget to. So you have a 125/500 (25%) chance at least.

Wow my edit took too long. I just realized that those accepted, rather than attending, with a 1300+ are invited. Oh, and there’s also a wait list.

So a 1300 is around average now for accepted students. Therefore, that’s around 2000 of 4000 accepted students not taking into account those who got a 1300+ but aren’t in the top 15% of their class. The yield rate is around 30% or 600 of those students, but I think at least 1/3 of those won’t attend so that leaves 400. A bunch of those people probably don’t want to apply honors or forget to leaving 350. So if 125 slots have to be filled, there’s a 35% (125/350) chance at least. I’m just playing with numbers so don’t take this too seriously lol.

Does your high school still report what percentile you were in? Because my high school also did not report rank but they informed colleges if we were in the top 5%, 10%, 15%, etc and I still got an invite. I got my invitation after my acceptance.

Are you a current senior or student at TCNJ??
No, we don’t rank or have any percentile (extremely small and competitive scool).
Do you know how much later you got it?
What were your scores like?

Yep I’m currently a freshman. I think I got the invite sometime in March because I’m pretty sure the actual application was due by April 15th or something like that.

I think I had a 1370 SAT and my GPA was 102 (my school doesn’t convert it to the 4.0 scale). I graduated valedictorian of my class.

I would contact them. It wouldn’t hurt to inquire and if you think you’ve got the stats to get an invite (I would think they would accept an ACT score) you’ve got a right to ask.

Thank you, I actually got in to one of my “reach/target” schools now, so I’m not sure if I’ll ask them. I might anyway, just to see and keep my options open! Thanks again HazelEyes!

I called them, and they said they will be sending me an application shortly.
But if you get in the program, does that give any more scholarship money?
Or is it only the merit scholarship and FAFSA aid already awarded? Because tuition is only $6,500 in state $10,500 out of state (approx.), right? Or am I way off?
