My academic stats are superb and I got a likely, so I thought an invite to the honors program would follow, but I guess not. Is there any way I can join the program?

you can still take classes its just that honors students have priority when choosing the honors classes. And you can apply in you second year to the program.

I am in the same boat as you. I got offered a “Distinguished Scholarship” the other day from them too, but still no invite. At this point I don’t even care; I’m just ready to move in. :D

You can apply as early as 2nd semester of your first year here. And I wouldn’t worry too much about it. And taking Honors classes is pretty easy. I took 3 before ever being in the program.

tarheel151, I’d ask about the Honors program. I’ve only met one person who received a scholarship who wasn’t admitted into the Honors program.

My son received a likely and a distinguished scholarship and was not offered a spot in the Honors Program. You think he should ask?

Hmm, very strange. When you say distinguished, I’m assuming you mean Carolina, Johnston, or Pogue, right?

No, it’s just called a Distinguished Scholarship. Its a $2500 per year award for sixty in-state students.

Hey, I also got a likely letter and a Distinguished Scholarship but no Honors invite (I emailed them about it too). It’s nice to know that there are other people in the same boat.

I think that UNC should restrict likely letters, Board of Visitors invitations, and other such forms of flattery to students who have been chosen for the Honors program. It feels sort of meaningless to hear UNC call me “one of their top applicants” if they didn’t think I was good enough for a spot in the Honors program.

Funky - Did you hear back from UNC after you sent your email? If so, did they have an explanation?

I looked into it earlier. By looking at the admissions blogs, it seems that 600 students are identified by admissions to be considered by the honors committee made up of professors. I suspect all 600 are sent likely letters (don’t know this for sure). Of those 600, the honors committee selects 300 to be invited to the honors college. Admissions/honors committee are separate. In fact, the honors committee sends out the invitations to honors. Admissions may look at different criteria (maybe more on stats?) for awarding scholarships.

If you figure MC and Robertson finalists (not just award winners) probably get into honors, there aren’t that many spots left. Most say it’s not difficult to take honors classes and apply later on. I know several who choose to leave honors. It’s not set in stone.

But if they only give out a couple hundred scholarships each year, you would think that they would qualified enough to make it into the 300 honors spots. (PS- the Morehead and Robertson are independent of the school)

Admissions determine the scholarships and probably passed your application on to the honors committee. My understanding is that the committee focuses a lot on the essays.

Yes, I know the MC and Robertson are independent of the school. But, admissions know who the nominees are and passes on additional nominees to the MC and Robertson committees.

I’m sorry to all of you without the Honors invite, but congratulations on the scholarship! If it helps at all I was invited to Honors with no likely letter and no scholarship, so the opposite happens too.

Ok, sorry for the confusion. I didn’t know the distinguished scholarships were something different from all the scholarships that I mentioned. That might not get you into the Honors Program.

Again, I would like to emphasize that being in the Honors Program should not be the deciding factor for coming to UNC. I can’t tell people that enough. I was not accepted to the Honors Program and was more than a little bitter about it, but came here anyway and now I can’t imagine myself anywhere else.

I’m not that concerned about the honors program, seeing as how I have already paid my deposit. It just would have been icing on the cake, that’s all. :/

Same with my son. He is definitely going. He is a tarheel!

Has anyone actually talked to the school about this?

Admissions where they talked about honors and merit scholarships (sorry, to sure how to make links on this site. According to one area, I read that the distinguished scholarships are given based on merit+need.

The scholarship my son received was merit based only. In quick summary the letter states that it is based on past academic achievement and the potential for future success. We did not apply for any need based assistance.
GT - It does seem clear from the links you gave that Honors and Scholarship invites are separate invitations. Thanks for looking it up.

Congrats BU. Did your son go to the scholarship weekend?
(Hmm, guess I made links just fine)
