Honors Programs in AZ/CO

Interested in information about experiences in the Honors Program at U of AZ, U of CO? How do you view the quality of the program (Engineering) and the ability of the HP to create a smaller campus experience?

We are currently checking out the Barrett Honors College at ASU in the Phoenix area. So far I am very impressed! They really seem to have an excellent program and everyone has been extremely helpful with us. They even have a smaller “West Campus” that is supposed to give a small college experience, if you want to be separated from the larger main campus. But keep in mind, the honors kids have their own program and their own dorms (this is a big selling point for us), so there is a lot of separation anyways.

I’ve heard the honors program at the U of A is pretty good too, but my son prefers Phoenix to Tucson so we are focusing on ASU.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for responding!!

If by “own program” you mean some lower-division classes at Barrett and special sections of a few other classes in the regular ASU offerings, yes. If you mean that ALL the classes one takes are taught at Barrett and with fellow Barrett students, no. To complete a major thru Barrett your upper-division classes will be the regular offering taught to all students at ASU. In fact of the 120 units required for a degree, only 36 of them are Honors units. See

Ok thanks, that is good to know. We are considering a number of schools, but Barrett at ASU is actually moving to the top of our list. However, I have to say that our financial situation is definitely a big factor in this! I’m kind of worried that my son won’t get a good enough financial aid package at any of the other schools we are considering, and I’m hoping that ASU will give him a pretty good deal. Fingers crossed!

If you’re OOS, UC Boulder is going to cost you 51K/yr and there isn’t likely to be much in the way of aid. It’s getting to be a UC without promising the broad excellence of a Berkeley or UCLA. It’s a shame that the legislature has abandoned its flagship. Barrett won’t be anywhere near as expensive.
