Inspired by an honors-dorm thread over on the Parents Forum--what state schools offer priority registration to honors students? Overwhelmingly I hear that this is by far the most useful perk.

I am personally interested in non-Southern schools that aren't ridiculously expensive (UVM, UMich, UVA, W&M, UCs) and academically challenging for a top (let's say Ivy-stat) student. Narrowing down even more to personal preferences, it would also be academically equivalent to or higher than UDel. And merit aid is an important plus, of course.

Penn State Schreyers. I know a few kids accepted from my school this year. Honestly, it’s like you are going to a different school. Just from talking to them about thier summer assignment it seems very challenging. They already registered for thier classes and have thier own honors dorms so they definitely get priority. Schreyers is very well ranked among honors colleges and has sent many a student to Penn and other elites for grad school.

W&M has various programs that allow priority registration.

The first of these is the Murray Scholars program, which if I remember correctly, comes with full tuition, a study abroad semester at Oxford, special seminar classes, and other closer contacts with faculty, among other things.

The second is the Monroe Scholars program which has special faculty lunches, seminars, and speakers, an honors dorm, and guaranteed summer research funding. It represents the top 7% of the incoming class, and special access to the Charles Center and attached lounge.

The final program is the Sharpe Community Scholars program which is focused on service learning and community engagement. It allows members honors housing (separate from Monroe), access to special classes, special research opportunities related to community engagement or health or local organizing or the like. It has special access to the Office of Community Engagement and Scholarship. Admittance is by application.

UVM does offer priority registration for its honors students, and also a beautiful new dorm. However, its merit aid for out of state students is limited; two years ago, it was capped at $3000/year if there was no other financial need.

pierre - Could you be more specific? All of the honors programs I’ve looked at–Delaware, Pittsburgh, Michigan, Virginia–do not offer priority registration.

I’m sorry Keilexandra, I’m guess I’m wrong, of course I didn’t look into honors programs so I’m sorry for making a false assumption

HOWEVER, Clemson University has priority class registration for honors students.

“All members of the Calhoun Honors College, whether they are in University Honors or Calhoun Scholars, have priority course registration, as well as the opportunity (on a space-available basis) to live in Holmes Hall.”

Thanks for the tip, pierre. I should also add here, as general info, that UNC-Chapel Hill does NOT offer priority registration. W&M’s seems to be only for freshman seminars.

Arizona State’s Barrett Honors College is very good and has priority registration. The whole Honors College is moving into a brand new complex this coming fall. You might want to go to ASU’s web site to check out the Barrett Honors College.
