I have heard that there are honors programs that freshman applicants can qualify for within each UC. I have a couple of questions about these programs:

1) Do you have to apply for them as you apply to the UC itself or do they just send you a letter after you apply and get in? (In other words, do you have to actively apply for them?)

2) What exactly do honors programs allow you to do (take different classes, get scholarships, etc.)?

Please link me to any sources that you learned the info from. Thanks!

Edit: Does anyone know if privates have honors programs too?

Each UC campus runs the honors program a little differently. Some invite the students to participate while others require you to apply. There are sometimes restrictions depending on your major (for example, UCLA only offers the honors program to majors in College of Letters & Science). The easiest way to find the information you need is to visit the UC campus website and search the term “honors program.”

The honors program offers different perks at different UC campuses, but most of them will offer honors courses (different from regular courses), additional academic resources (counseling), and scholarships.

Thank you Ms. Sun. I did go to each college’s honors website but it got confusing with all the different ones.

Thanks also, ahnyoungs2.

Which UC campuses? I can try to search the information for you. PM me if you want or just post the list here.

Thank you so much! I’m applying to UCSD, UCLA, and UCB.

Here is what I’ve found so far, maybe you could correct me if you find anything different:

UCSD - Each of six colleges has own honors program. Need min. 3.8 GPA and 700+ on each SAT I section to get invite.

UCLA - Honors program by GPA/SAT I (submit essay using online MyUCLA Honors Program application) OR high school class rank

UCB - No honors programs?

UCSD’s six-college system is confusing to everyone but you are correct that each runs its own honors program and the programs are by invitation only.

UCLA’s honors program is only available to majors in College of Letters & Science and you have to apply to get in - [Admission to College Honors](http://www.ugeducation.ucla.edu/honors/freshman.html).

Berkeley’s honors program is decentralized. L&S has a couple of parallel programs that offer academic distinction and also honors programs at the major level (usually involving an honors thesis/research in your senior year) - [College Policies-Honors](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/collegepolicies/honors.html). The rest of the colleges usually have some form of academic recognition or honors program at the major level. You should have plenty of time to find out about them - most require that you reach junior or senior standing before you qualify.

Thank you so much!
