Just called the Honors Office and apparently all the decisions have been pushed back. They're hoping to get the early action decisions mailed by next week, but we'll hear by mid-april at the latest

I know of several students that have already received letters of acceptance into the Honor's Program. A few of them have known for over a month (don't remember when they heard.)

me too, they were the ones that were basically guaranteed a spot

Ok, I really want to knw about honors! I have been rejeted from almost all the other school I have applied to and Honors is my last hope. I guess regular UGA is fine but I know so many people in honors.

I heard April 14th is the day. I doubt I'll get into honors, my board scores were lower than the honors average (1370 and I think the average is in the mid-1400s) and I'm out of state (PA).

Good luck to you guys, though.

The reality for those of us who haven't heard by now is that we probably aren't getting in. UGA supposedly already gave over 900 students invitations to Honors based purely on numbers (ie they didn't even read the apps.) Given that I worked my b*** off on a Foundation Fellowship App, was given a Charter Scholarship, but am still likely to be rejected from Honors, I'm pretty p.o.'d at UGA's selection system. Like I said, most of us who haven't heard aren't getting in, so why can't UGA just give us that info, so we can chose from the other institutions that clearly want us? Someone needs to get their act together!

What they're trying to do is see how many honors people enroll. They're trying to keep honors at 2000-2500 total and right now are at the top limit of that number. Ideally, they'd expand the honors program and add more people but they probably don't have the funds. Pushing back the date gives them a better idea of how many people are going to enroll in honors so they can see who to admit. At least, that's my theory.

Your theory would hold water if they asked Honors Folks to respond by April 1, so they could see how many slots were still available. But they are nor required to respond until May 1, long after they need to send out the rest of our rejections. The process sucks. It has really soured me on UGA.

Elizabeth, UGA is having a problem with too many qualified applicants for too few slots. As Vig said, this could be solved by expanding the program, unfortunately it isn't possible and it's over capacity as it is. Honors people have told me that there simply are not enough classes nor are there enough professors to teach them. In addition, the program, as well as the school, could really use more money in order to hire better professors(and keep the good ones). I think UGA really needs a major endowment in order for their honors program and their school in general to progress. Certainly the quality of the students are there(I only mean the honors program of course), but the school is having a hard time keeping up.

Not having enough money or slots for Honors folks is a forgivable sin. Stringing people along--when they know darn well the slots aren't there--is another matter. I know I sound like a whiner--suffering sour grapes--but I am just so disappointed in UGA's ugly bureaucracy. If they had just given me a "no" back in February or even by the March 15th deadline they self-imposed, I would have accepted the situation and moved on by now.

UGA also suffers in comparison to the really amazing experiences I've had with other schools' admissions/honors programs (other schools at least pretend to have an interest in me as an individual). At UGA, they make it clear that you're nothing but a raw score. This is even more true for the solid student hoping against hope they'll get accepted RD. Too bad.

^^ I agree.

THough I dont blame them for the small numbers, i DO blame them for taking so long on honors. I need to know whether I am in or not to decide if I want to go there and deadlines are getting closer and closer.

I wish UGA didn't didn't automatically give out spots in honors based purely on stats... I mean it really ****es me off that a lot of kids at my school who applied to UGA as a last resort safety got into honors automatically without even filling out an application. A lot of my friends with decent stats (SAT's in the 1400-1500's and GPA's 3.8+) who probably could've gotten in may not now just because spots were given away to kids who didn't even want to go to UGA. I really hate the thought of people who didn't even want to go to UGA getting to attend with spots in the honors program when they're only going because they got rejected at their top choice colleges. One of the kids at my school who got honors early had taken NO AP's but got in because he had a 2280(1540) on the SAT and a 4.0 GPA. Meanwhile, two of my friends are still waiting on their decisions. Both are good students. One has a 2260(1530) a slightly low GPA of 3.85'ish, but has taken EIGHT AP's and made 800's on his SAT II's. My other friend has a 4.02 GPA with a slightly low SAT score(1410). He has taken 7 AP's. I think it's pretty obvious that the kid who got it early is probably the least prepared out of these three for college and he obviously took no risks in high school and just spent time studying for the SAT and making A's in easy classes. That really makes me mad. I still love UGA and can't wait to go, but the way the honors department has handed out spots has really made me worry. I hope that a lot of the kids in the program are well-rounded, interesting, and happy to be at UGA, but from what I've seen of the kids who got in at my school, I'm really not sure. Sorry for the long rant, but I had to express my feelings somewhere haha.

Gosh, I'm with y'all on this! I wish UGA would just TELL US ALREADY! So much of my college decision hinges upon whether I get into the Honors program or not. I called the admissions office though, and apparently they're trying to send out the decisions on Friday the 7th and Monday the 10th. Hopefully we'll hear this week! My theory on this business is this: I think UGA accepted a lot of students based on stats alone, and then realized that tons of applications were pouring in, more than in past years. Since they couldn't go back and tell those students who were already accepted to Honors early that they changed their minds, they decided to hold off until ALL applications came in, and then carefully reviewing every single one, which is why there's this long of a wait. I heard the office was completely inudated with Honors apps. this year and UGA wasn't quite prepared for this many students to be interested. Good luck to all of you guys! I hope y'all hear only good news this week! :)

My mom called the school. Here's what she found out:
-Similar to in the past, they accepted about 450 into the honors program this year
-That was out of a pool of about 1000 kids who applied
-They are mailing the final honors decision letters this week and we should recieve them by saturday
-It is not true that all the letters this week will be rejections. A LOT of kids will be finding out, too many for that to be true.

As far as my opinion goes, I have no idea whether I will achieve honors status at UGA, but I don't think any student should have to make a final decision on anything until May 1st. There are too many schools waiting until mid april (like UGA) to finish sending out acceptances. That gives me 2 weeks to decide! It's a pain but as Vonnegut says: "So it goes". I agree with the assertion about UGA honors and raw scores though. If you visited one of the honors sessions there you know what is going on. Blech.

In an additional note: Ryan, you crack me up.

I got my letter today!

Good luck everybody!

Max, can we assume you got in Honors? I think it's encouraging if you did--means there's at least a few slots left.

Anybody besides Max get an honors letter yet?

Hey Elizabethtown,

I sure did get in. (Yes!) :) DON'T STRESS IF YOU HAVEN'T GOTTEN ONE YET! I heard that they are sending them out ALL THROUGH the week!

I'm definitely going to UGA Honors next fall! Hope to see you all there!

congrats man! see ya next fall =)

Yeah so I got the rejection letter today and might I say it was pretty crappy.

Dear ----,
Admission to the University of Georgia is highly competitive, and you are to be congragulated on the outstanding high school record which resulted in your selecion for the class of 2010. The number of applications to the Honors Program from academically gifted students like you was very large. Therefore, in order to maintain small class sizes and provide individual attention to our students, we are unable to offer you membership in the Honors Program at this time.

It goes on to say how impressive my app was (yeah right, if it was i would be in) and says that I should apply during first semester.

I guess this means I am going to Emory because it is now way worth the money.
