Hi guys! I’d like to get some discussion started about the Honors/Scholars program at OSU. What character did you guys choose for your essays and why? Or anything else you want to talk about
FYI, Ohio State sent out an email last night asking applicants to the Scholar’s program to rank their preferred program. i think that my eldest son who is an OOS junior at Ohio State really got a lot out of the Scholar program during his freshman year at OSU. Because he is OOS, he did not know anyone at Ohio State and the residential housing aspect of his Scholar program and the weekly meetings and activities was a great way to meet people.
The Honors program has more benefits when it comes to early registration; however, my youngest son who was recently admitted to Fisher is also going to pursue a Scholar’s program. I wish Ohio State didn’t prohibit applicants being in both Honors and Scholars concurrently; however, something to consider is that you can participate in the Scholar’s community during your first year and always seek admission to Honors later on. However, as I understand it, the only pathway to the Scholar’s community is as a freshman applicant.
Good luck to everyone.
fatherof2boys, did only the applicants who received admission acceptances get that email regarding scholars program? My daughter applied but hasn’t heard yet.
I believe its only for those who have been accepted so far into OSU as the first paragraph in the email states the following:
“Congratulations on your admission to The Ohio State University! We are pleased that you indicated an interest in being considered for the Ohio State Scholars Program. We have your application materials, including your Honors & Scholars essay, and now invite you to continue in the Scholars application process.”
fatherof2boys, thank you for the quick reply and congratulations to you!
Hi! I just got my email to rank my preferences for the Scholars programs. I’m really hoping for either Humanities Scholars or Advocates for Communities and Education. Oh, and I wrote my essay about Katherine Plummer from the musical Newsies. We both love to write, and we’ve both had our abilities underestimated by mentors. (She gets denied the chance to write important articles because she’s a woman, and I had a dual-enrollment professor tell me to drop his class on the very first day because I “probably couldn’t handle it”)
Would this email also come to people who only applied to Honors? (I forgot, actually, on the application can you apply to both, or only one?)
At least on the Common App, I had to choose either Honors or Scholars, and I picked Scholars. I think the process for applying is different depending on which one you pick.
Anyone else gotten notification that they got into Honors?
My daughter waa accepted to the Honors program by email this morning. The email came at 11pm last night.
I was also sent an email with my acceptance to the honors program last night at 11! I chose to apply for honors mainly because of my desire to be considered for Eminence Fellows, but I think it’s really up to the individual as to which is better.
Son trying to check on Honors acceptance but can’t get on portal to check OSU email - anyone else having same problem?
My soon recieved an email he was accepted into the honors program
@njmom
Did Honors acceptance go to buckeye email or regular email?
@njdmom @ohiogirl8251 @1happypappy Congratulations on Honors acceptance! Do you mind sharing basic stats such as ACT/SAT scores, In state vs Out of state, major etc?
@lowcountrychic Pretty sure honors/scholars was based on an essay. I didn’t want to do another essay, and instead did the MS essay.
@lowcountrychic sure!
ACT: 35 (36 e 35 r 35 s 34 m)
GPA: 4.4 w, 4.0 uw
Residency: In-State
Major: Marketing
Misc: several international awards in inventing and writing, strong commitment to student leadership and my extracurriculars
Good luck to you!!
@equationlover You are correct that there was an essay component to the Honors application; however, they likely take the highest achievers this early. I noted from prior posts that some individuals that were already accepted to Honors did indeed have high (35-36 range) ACT scores…
@lowcountrychic We are from New York. My daughter had a 34 ACT, her major is Neuroscience. She has applied for the Biomedical Science Major. Honors email was sent to her personal email.
My D also found out about honors on 12/1. Her stats are nice, but not at the 35/36 ACT range:
ACT: 32
GPA: 4.4w, 3.95uw
Residency: CO
Major: Speech/Hearing Sciences (not sure the exact, this is what she plans to study).
Misc: 6 AP’s, Several extra-curriculars, leadership positions, Varsity Soccer.
Note: I’m a very biased parent, but I thought her essay to OSU was “over the top”
For her, merit scholarships are going to be important in her decision.
Good luck to all.
