Honors section

What can go here? The directions state "Briefly list any academic distinctions or honors you have received since the ninth grade or international equivalent (e.g. National Merit, Cum Laude Society)."

If I have won national writing contests, video contests, etc., would these be considered "academic distinctions"? Should I put these here? If not, what does go here?

Yes. National Writing Contests and other sorts of competitions count. Most types of competitions (science, math, writing, business, etc.) count as awards/honors for this section.

If it relates to an academic subject, it can probably be listed here.

Foreign language test awards.

…? So writing contests/competitions can go there?

Yes. You can put your writing contests/competitions in the honors section on the common app.

Writing contest can go there. Video contest is debatable. However, if you’re at least moderately serious about film and it comes down to Video Contest vs. 9th Grade Geometry Highest Grade Honorable Mention for the fifth spot, go with the video contest, even if it’s less academic.
