Honors seminars

I was wondering if they're worth taking if they're hosted by your college, not your major. I know colleges like muir have honors seminars that are actually worth units, but Revelle's is 0 units and pretty much a complete waste of time. :/ Is there any benefit in taking this class, or is it better to just drop it and save time?

Honors seminars in major department > college department

I feel like you’d get more freedom in who you would want to choose as a mentor. Chances are it’ll also be within your field of study, which could be a) more interesting to you. b) it’d be more legitimate because there is usually a harder screening process and therefore more satisfying (by that I mean getting above a certain GPA, taking a certain amount of credits/classes, etc.) If you’re applying to grad school I think it’d be more legit that way. Before most people do their honors theses they also do independent study with a professor, so they have a more hands-on feel for a research topic, and by then have taken more classes and have read more literature. I personally have not done an honors seminar at my college but it seems like people would guide your hand more, as if it weren’t possible to do on your own. I dunno, but I get the impression that some of the smartest people I have met purposefully drop the college seminars for the major ones.

I’m not invited to take an honors sem for my major yet, but I feel like the only reason i’m taking the revelle honors(gpa>3.8 for invite) is for my transcript. With that said, does it even look good there, or does it even matter?

You don’t have to be invited to do an honors thesis for your major. You yourself must take the initiative to talk to professors as long as you maintain above a certain GPA.

I’m not saying that doing an honors seminar in Revelle will be bad, but if you do an honors thesis for your major also then that will definitely stand out more, because when you apply to grad school it will be in your field of study, not whatever the Revelle faculty advises you to do. That being said I think the most impressive thing you would get out of doing a seminar for your college is the letter of rec.
