Does anybody know much about the Honors Tutorial College at Ohio University and how strong their journalism program is compared to schools like Northwestern and UNC-Chapel Hill, where I have also applied? I have been invited to interview for HTC on the 20th. Do you know how selective it is?

Private message a dad named Digmedia. He has a son in the honors college and knows a LOT about it. I know it is a VERY selective program - especially for journalism.

Erv,

I was in the HTC literature program for two years, but I was also admitted to the journalism program. My advice is to skip HTC and consider Northwestern or Indiana University, which also has a highly regarded journalism program. (I was also admitted to Northwestern and these days sort of regret not going there -- cost was the main issue.) No amount of scholarship money (and I, presumably like you, had pretty much all of it at OU) could have rectified the things that made HTC hell for me and for a many others: the feelings of isolation and insularity, the guilt at being treated "like royalty" for no good reason, the creepy, meddlesome administrators, the immature, cliquish classmates, and the knowledge that despite how's it's marketed as "elite," there's no really good network of HTC students. (There were some good students and some good experiences but they were the exception.)

Attend the interviews for some entertainment, but please, please don't go to school there. If you seek it, you'll get plenty of personal attention wherever you go.
