Honors Tutorial College

I've gone back and reviewed some older threads re the HTC, but would be interested in getting some additional input, if anyone has any additional information, insights, whatever to offer.

My younger son applied to the HTC, declaring an interest in a business major, and has been invited for an interview in mid-January, so we'll soon be driving out there from our home in Illinois for a couple days.

Though I'd be interested in hearing pretty much anything that anyone might have to say about the HTC program, I guess I'd be particularly interested in the following:

--What should we expect on the interview day? (I gather that there are a bunch of things going on that day in addition to the interview itself.)

--Does anyone here have any experience with the business track in the HTC (or otherwise have any info about it)?

--What do folks regard as the potential upsides and downsides of the HTC program (and, more specifically, the business track), of OU generally, etc.?

--Any particular suggestions re places to stay, eat, see, etc., while there for this visit?

There's much about this program that seems, at least on the surface, very appealing: the amount of individualized attention that's apparently received by the students, the small-community-within-a-large-school concept, what seems to be very generous merit-based financial aid, etc. At this point, we're trying to both broaden and deepen our feel for the program. Any help on this score would be much appreciated.

Hi epistrophy...

I don't know how far you've gone back in the threads, but you probably know that you can go farther back than the default set up to show you the previous threads. I wasn't there when my son interviewed, but I am fairly sure that they did have some additional activities set up.

I have found that the HTC experience for my son was exactly what I thought it would be. But that can be good or bad, depending on the student. It is a LOT of attention, which may be too much for a student looking to disappear between the cracks. It is sort of a "family" within the HTC, and the perks are incredible. I have heard that it is difficult to transfer tutorial credits if the student wishes to transfer to another school, and I have heard that the quality of the tutorials might vary somewhat. But I have nothing but praise for the program, GIVEN THAT the entering student is self-directed and independent.

One of the things I like best about the HTC is that they seem to help financially support student projects and aspirations. For example, my son got financial assistance to attend a summer course at Stanford that wasn't offered at OU. In addition, the school funded several other grant requests as well.

Even though my son is doing a business minor, I really don't know much about the program, except that he is getting a lot of advice from the school on a business venture he is undertaking.

The best thing that happened to him at OU/HTC was the group of friends he has gathered around him - a group of extremely talented, smart, driven individuals. They have done amazing things as a group.

The financial aspect has been great too. Don't discount the fact that about two-thirds to three-fourths of your tuition will be taken care of in scholarships.

btw, "meet" my son at [url=http://www.honors.ohio.edu/testimonial.htm]Ohio University: Honors Tutorial College:Video Testimonials/url. He graduates this year.

My advice would be: At the interviews, both you and your son use it as an opportunity to meet the other students/faculty there. I know they interview about twice as many students as they invite for admission, so GOOD LUCK!

DM:

Thanks much for your observations (both here and on previous threads regarding the HTC).

Judging from the video clip, your son seems to be very much at home in this program--which must be greatly satisfying for all of you.

With this being my second (and last) time through the college-application circus, it's hard sometimes not to get at least a wee bit jaded after hearing the same things over and over again during the sales pitches from the folks at different schools. One of the reasons why I'm looking forward to our upcoming trip to OU is that, whatever its strengths and weaknesses may be, the HTC program does seem to offer something that's genuinely different and distinctive in the college marketplace. Whether it winds up being right for my son or not, and whether or not he's offered admission, it should be an interesting trip.

Anyone else?

Please, please, please keep us up to date with what is happening, and also your impressions of the interview weekend. Again, good luck.

So what were your impressions of OU and where did your son finally choose to go to school?
