Honors vs regular...how important?

Hey I was wondering how much honors classes in college mean? I am in the honors program but I couldn’t get into the honors classes since they were full. Would that affect my resume even tho I am in the honors program?

Also, does not being in honors classes first year affect my ability of getting in next year? In other words, if I’m in standard freshman year, can I get honors classes next year? Or will it hurt not having honors pre requisite classes?

Last but not least, how much of a factor is being in honors? I mean, I got into honors at one school but didn’t at a better school…

Thanks

For nonprofessional grad school admissions (such as PhD programs), the honors designation may be important for coursework. For everyone else, the “boost” you get on your resume from taking honors coursework is pretty minimal.

This could be different from school to school, so be sure to consult with older students/alumni and your academic advisor.

Being in an honors program, on the other hand is a different story. For the situation you described (honors at one school vs no honors at the other school), it would depend on which two schools and what are you seeking in a school.

Contact the Honors adviser and after introducing yourself, indicate you were unable to register for freshman honors seminars and would like to know how to register for x, w, z. Thank you, sincerely, etc
Typically there’s a requirement for you to take some honors classes every year, it’s also a benefit for you. Most importantly, not being able to take a certain number of honors classes may cut you out of honors college and any scholarship that comes with it (not to mention the opportunities).

A lot of this depends on your particular school. But in general honors vs non-honors doesn’t really mean very much, you may get some benefits like early registration and more class choices (honors).

Talk to your advisor at the college.

Honors means a lot to the experience. Early registration is worth it on its own, and small classes especially as you start college will make a lot of difference.
If you’re in the Honors college, you should be able to enroll in honors classes.
More importantly, if you’re in the Honors college, you’re expected to take honors classes and if you don’t, you lose your privileges and the scholarship that typically comes with them…
