Honors waitlisted

OK...My DD is waitlisted for LAH at UT. If she doesn't get in she is considering going to another University. It will be after May 1 (I guess) when she finds out, that is after the deadline. What do people do in this situation??

For people who are waitlisted at other schools, generally, you make the assumption that you will NOT get accepted where you are waiting. Then you make your deposits, etc. at the next school on your list and proceed as though that is where you are going (because it very well might be).

If you get accepted off the waitlist at Texas, you cancel your registration at the other school (you most likely will not be able to get deposits refunded). Schools know that this scenario arises with some frequency, so they should not have any problems with it, but they probably won’t give your money back. I assume your daughter paid her housing application fee back when she applied to TX, so has a place in the queue for a dorm. If she has not done this, she needs to do so ASAP.

Thanks Vailsmom…yes, she did pay her housing app. fee when she applied. Should she pay her deposit to UT also in case she is still undecided or will they hold her spot while she waits to hear from LAH?

She has been accepted to UT, just waitlisted for LAH. (wanted to clarify)

If it were me, I would definitely pay the enrollment deposit now, just so that I wouldn’t have to worry about missing the deadline – it may be that if she doesn’t get accepted to LAH they would consider refunding it (that’s a big leap of faith on my part). Regardless, make sure you get the deposit in before May 1 because I would not assume they would give you leeway on it just because of the LAH issue.

Since my son is OOS, we had several conditions for letting him go to Texas. The top of the list was on campus housing (I was horrified to hear that only 56% of freshman live on campus). I told him, “I don’t care if they make you president of the school or king of the world. I will not send you 1400 miles away to live in an apartment with strangers when you are still 17 years old.” Second was being in LAH. Fortunately, he agreed on both counts and we managed to figure out that he needed to pay his housing application fee early. (No small thanks to CC for this information!)

I recognize that he could have chosen a private dorm, but I just do not have a comfort level with them (although we looked at them when we were there.)

Last year we paid our dorm and admission deposits and S ended up going to another school. We got a full refund from UT but one of the 2 had to be requested it didn’t come back automatically. I can’t recall which one.
