Is anyone here going to the honors weekend? Are your parents coming with you? Do you plan to stay ovenight with a student? Just wondering

When my D went (2004), I went with her (the mom). Almost all the students there were with a parent or other adult. Tulane had a great program that included some excellent food, we learned alot, and my D almost went there (after Tulane had been #5 on her list). While we were visiting, we hit it off with another mom and her D. This girl had a freshman friend on campus. So while D did not "overnight" there, she was able to go out with these girls on the 2nd night of the weekend.

They had a fabulous time, and the weather was perfect. Of all the visits we had, we felt Tulane's hosting of this event was among the very best.

Hope you get to go and hope this info helps a little.

Thanks so much. My older sister did a weekend at a different school when she was looking and told me it would be weird if my mom went too. My mom wants to see the school though. My sister was probably just trying to worry me though so my moms coming along. Thanks again

We did a weekend visit in October, so if my son goes to the honors weekend, I was planning to let him go on his own (his preference as well, I believe). Is this the exception rather than the rule??

jym, when my D and I went, it seemed to me that the majority of students had a parent with them. It could be that I was also looking for them :)

However, if we had previously done a campus visit, D would have definitely gone on her own and probably opted to stay overnight with a student.

Not ALL the students had a parent with them, of that you can be sure!

I'm going. Was planning on my mom being with me. Not staying overnight there though. Staying at a funky, old, haunted (?) b and b! My mom and I plan on going to great restaurants both nights we're there. My favorite is NOLA. Anyone been there?

I'm going to the second one on March 31.

Can't wait!!

Our favorite is NOLA too, but we had an amazing dinner at K-Pauls last night -- felt almost disloyal! :)

We will try it this time! We will be there two nights.

I'm going--hope it's fun. My parents might end up at the Windsor Court, since they can't find a hotel that close to Tulane. I guess this is an excuse for them to take a vacation....

Anyone know if they'll have transportation to/from the airport? DS will have to look into that.

From: Tulane University Undergraduate Admission

The Airport Shuttle service charges $13 each way between Louis Armstrong International Airport and Tulane University. You can purchase tickets in advance at New Orleans Airport Shuttle; airport transportation:group rates, Louis Armstrong International Airport, group shuttle, hotel, ground transportation, airport bus, dropoff, convention center, new orleans east, ernest morial, french quarter, group trans or upon arrival at the baggage claim area. The Airport Shuttle van stops at the Tulane Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life, a short walk from the Office of Admission.

Taxis are also plentiful and not unreasonable - on the order of $25.

Thanks, CT2010Dad. I have to wonder how often the shuttles run between the airport and campus (especially on a Sunday morning). If DS flies in early Sun morning and ther is any kind of delay, he'll have to hustle to get to the programs on campus. If Tulane is expecting a good number of studnts for the event, they might have some sort of transportation available. I'll ask DS to call and see.

This is Maleah's mom. I rented a car using Priceline for $14 a day! (I bid for that price.) If you are staying more than one day, and plan to go back and forth from hotel to Tulane, the taxi fare really adds up. Renting a car is the way to go. If you are just coming for a day, or staying at Tulane only, then you probably won't need a car. But, remember the shuttle charges that price per person.

^^^ When we were there in October we got a car for like $12/day! Then they were out of the small cars and gave us a fullsize (held 5!) It was a great deal! However, if ds goes by himself, I do not believe he can rent a car because (1) he is only 17, (2) he doesn't have a credit card and (3) I wouldn't want him trying to find his way around town in a rental car.

Does anyone have a good hotel recommendation? Something close to French Quarter and restaurants.

The Loews Hotel in Poydras is great (as is Cafe Adelaide, the restaurant on the first floor) . There are many good choices..... it depends on your bugdet. You can look at recommendations given in the Trip advisor site : New Orleans Hotels: Read New Orleans Hotel Reviews and Compare Prices - TripAdvisor

Agree it depends on the rates - and these depend on what convention is in town. We've stayed at the Pavillon and loved it - it is a more traditional hotel close to the French Quarter, but far enough away so that you're not awakened by the revelers late at night - and we've been able to get good rates each time. They have a quaint tradition of serving peanut butter sandwiches at 10 p.m. every night.

bump........

I'm going to one of them. Don't know which date yet.
