For those of you that attended last year, I was just wondering what goes on during the accepted student's Honors weekends in the Spring.

Thanks.

It’s worth the trip. After some intro stuff, they fairly quickly separate the kids from the parents. The parents are given tons of information on all things University in general and Tulane in particular, e.g. campus safety, social life, religious life, various school policies, etc. etc. The kids get some of the same stuff (but not with the parents, just to be clear) plus information on advising and classes, among other things more directly relevant to them. Then as I recall it, you get back together for dinner at Bruff, then the students go off and do fun stuff while the parents do whatever they want. The student spends the night in the dorm, then after morning sessions (again, separate; I think for the parents this is when they get into financial aid and things like that and for the kids this is when they can attend classes, if memory serves), you rejoin with your child. Since it is only for accepted students that were also invited into the Honors Program, it is a nice opportunity for your child to meet some of the other “best” students.

Thank you for your answer fallenchemist. My son has received the Presidential Scholarship and is definitely interested in Tulane.
Do you remember what time the program ended on Monday morning?

Sorry, I can’t quite remember. I think it officially ended shortly after lunch on Monday, but they will publish a schedule. I looked for the program from last year, but I couldn’t find it. Plus there is always the possibility they will change things some.

Congrats on the great scholarship.

We traveled from NY and my son made his decision that Tulane was the school for him at the Honors Weekend. He ate on campus, stayed over on campus and interacted with students. We had the opportunity to meet Professors, hear about the curriculumn and drive around the area to see where the students hang out. I don’t have the schedule, but we flew out on Thursday and spent some time in the city and surroundings. The events started on Sunday with seminars for Parents and seperate ones for the students, a lunch and then student met with their host for dinner and overnight accomodations. We returned for breakfast–lunch and more seminars then flew home on a 5pm flight after dropping off our rental car. So I would say we left around 2:30, and I don’t think we missed anything.

Is it really necessary to rent a car there? How is public transportation? And where did you stay - near Tulane or downtown? The downtown hotels seem to charge a lot for parking.

When we went down in June we did not rent a car, nor are we next week when we go. We took the streetcar everywhere we wanted to go, and we went everywhere. They’re pretty slow moving, but as long as you give yourself enough time they’re fine. We stayed at the Hilton Riverside last time and are staying at the Sonesta on Bourbon this time.

Did you take a taxi from the airport? (I assume you are flying in from somewhere)

Yes, we flew in from New Jersey and took a taxi to the hotel.

Mamajay - You do not need to rent a car at all. Taxi from the airport, and there are some hotels on St. Charles steps from the streetcar. We always stay at the Hampton Inn (Garden District) on St. Charles, but there are others as well. I have stayed in the Hilton Riverside many times on business, and it is great, but about an 8 block walk to the streetcar. For visiting Tulane the Garden District hotels are more convenient.

Feel free to send me a private message if you want, I can give you more information on this and restaurants, etc.

It was cheaper to rent a car and drive from airport to hotel then take a cab, so we decided to do it and keep it. We like to have our car to drive from FQ to Tulane. We also did some shopping at the mall. We always stay at the Bourbon Orleans in FQ, we love it there.

Car not necessary at all: cab $30 for 2 people but $14 if you share from airport to Tulane or downtown; cab from downtown to Tulane $13 but streetcar $1.25 and MUCH more fun. We stayed into Monday afternoon so my kid could sit in on an Intro Psych (not honors but that’s all available at the time) at 1, so we left around 3. Worth the trip. Still not so impressed with the academics, despite the “Honors” moniker. No city in the US can compare so take that out of your calculations!
