Honors

Is anyone applying to the Honors program?

I got offered admission to the Honors program because I applied Early Action and was awarded Honors at Entrance, so if I end up attending LMU, then I think I’ll take part in it! :)

My son was admitted Honors at Entrance as well. If he opts for LMU, he’ll likely apply for the honors program.

Wow I have never heard of someone getting accepted to the Honors Program automatically through EA/Honors at Entrance-Congrats! Compared to the number of students who receive Honors at Entrance only a small amount of them end up in Honors. The Admissions Department has nothing to do with the Honors Program. Students who receive the Presidential/Trustee merit scholarships aren’t even automatically accepted to Honors. My son said the Honors Program application process was just as involved as his college app-I don’t know because I did not get involved in the process but that is what he said (essays and more rec letters etc.). Make sure you adhere to their strict deadlines. They take very few students but it’s an awesome program. My son says it’s another of the many reasons he loves LMU so much.

Honors at Entrance does not automatically admit to the Honors program. One still must go through the application process. I know that my son’s school highlights these types of honorary things during the graduation ceremony. Other than that, I think it’s simply a certificate and notation.

@jamestg Select people who applied Early Action and received Honors at Entrance can be offered automatic admission - I know this because that’s what they offered me. They sent me a letter a few weeks after my acceptance offering me admission to the Honors Program and explaining that they only give automatic admission to select candidates who applied Early Action and received Honors at Entrance - everyone else has to apply.

@2Down2ToGo - Thank you very much!! I was really excited when I received the letter, as the Honors program looks amazing. LMU is one of my top choices, but the unfortunate thing is that right now I really can’t afford it. They didn’t give me a very generous scholarship (ironically, considering the Honors at Action recognition and Honors program offer), and without further grants or scholarships, I won’t be able to afford to go. Guess I’ll just have to wait until March 30 for the FA package!

As for the Honors program, though, it really does seem like an amazing program with a plethora of great opportunities and connections. I will definitely accept my offered spot in the program if I attend LMU!

@sheldekk Correct, I forgot that EA acceptances received automatic entrance. But RD must apply.

Yep, they just started doing that this year. Interesting to see how it will work out.

Is it too late to apply to the honors program now?

@pixeljig- No, decisions haven’t even finished. Can’t apply without accepting admission.

You can apply to honors before sending in your commitment deposit. I would hurry. You need 2 essays, and you want to have it turned in before the 3rd round.

Did anyone apply to Honors in the first round? I thought I was supposed to hear back by March 15 (today) and I was sent no email. Has anyone hear back yet?

@martinez326 I heard back today! I emailed them today though because I hadn’t heard back, and I was worried that maybe my application wasn’t processed in time for the first round. Maybe try that if you still haven’t heard by tomorrow? In the email it said that I’ll receive a formal letter in the mail, so that might be the regular notification protocol.

i just got an email today saying I was automatically accepted, they said it was because of the scholarship I got.

Have any of you/your kids decided to go to LMU?

@lynnmarie, LMU ended up #2 on my son’s list. Loves everything about LMU, but cs/engineering just isn’t a real strong program. Great profs and people, just small and not well known. So it looks like we’ll be freeing up some scholarship $ for others.

Can anyone speak to the intellectual atmosphere at LMU? Does the honors program provide a rigorous academic environment? Are the classes challenging? Are the students interested and hard working? What about in the regular classes?

Well, I think the students might be a little different this year (at least for the freshmen) because they did admission differently. The students really create the atmosphere. The honors program has always consisted of top notch students, but considering the recruited mostly from honors at entrance the students this year really will be the best of the best. Historically honors students tend to be very involved on campus and hold a lot of leadership positions.

The classes are harder than the regular core because they involve a lot more reading and go more in depth into the topics. The classes are interdisciplinary, but they involve a lot of critical thinking and analytical skills (a philosophy major would love to be in the program. As opposed to the regular university core, you can’t really get out of the honors core with AP test scores. If you have a 5 on a social science exam or foreign language then you can get out of one semester of social science and foreign language. This brings me to my next point. The honors core requires 3 semesters of foreign language (you may test out of one or two semester if you take the language placement test. Unlike regular classes where for example you’re required to take an American Cultures class, but you can choose any American cultures class you want to fulfill the requirement, you have to take specific classes for the honors program.

So, the classes are harder in way because there’s more reading and thinking involved, but they are more engaging. Professors have high expectations for you, so you don’t just sit, listen to a lecture and take notes.

Being in the program is about more than just the classes. You have a built-in community, especially if you decide to do honors housing. There are also just a lot of little perks you get if you’re an honors student.

What’s your major?

Some variations for science majors also. Program has been changing, been i influx recently, changing administration. D is sophomore, I think there is probably a heavier writing load to go with the reading also. She likes the size and atmosphere of classes, some of the perks, like priority registration. 3.5 GPA must be maintained, also attendance at some percentage of honors functions has been an issue.
