Honors?

I have a really specific question, but anyone in Honors can also give their input and I would appreciate it. Does anyone know what specific opportunities UGA Honors offers for pre-med students? Specifically, I know it is possible to do research as a regular UGA undergrad, but does being an Honors student actually have any research advantages/other advantages as a pre-med undergrad? I'm not talking about CURO, Foundation Fellowship, or any other scholarship/program; just opportunities for plain Honors students.

This will be a big factor in determining where I apply and ultimately decide to go to college, so thanks a lot for any input!

Come on guys. Anybody?

CURO is the main thing, its not hard to get in or anything. Also, if you talk to Honors profs sometimes they’ll hook you up with a research program with grad students. Other than that, just small class sizes, easier registration, better travel abroad opportunities, but nothing really specific to pre-med.

Thanks For replying. Well that’s pretty discouraging… Honors really isn’t all it’s built up to be I guess

Just because it does not have elements specifically cater to pre-meds, it’s not all it’s built up to be? Really?! I’m pretty sure, that as a pre-med, you will appreciate having much easier access to such resources than the rest of the student body. In addition, you don’t have to go through every extremely large weed-out style class that non-honors students do (and thus, be in classes where profs. never learn your name no matter how well you do, give abnormal amount of C/D/F grades, and make it hard to get an outstanding rec. letter). At a school as big as UGA, this is extremely beneficial. It’s like getting private school attention and resources without the level of academic competition and the sky-high tuition. Don’t be so quick to write off the honors program because it does not “specifically” cater to your career goal. It caters to anyone’s.

@Bernie, that’s very true. Your response was actually what I was trying to incite in my last comment. I already knew that about Honors, but I guess I was underestimating the importance of such a fact, especially at a college as large as UGA. Honors is still my #1 choice, but for a second I had lost track of why I was so hooked to go. Price/educational value are very important, and Honors is a great “bang for your buck”.

I have a 1480/2180 on my SAT, and I just took it for the 2nd time in June, as well as the ACT for the first time. I have a 4.0 UW GPA, and I’m hoping to get into UGA EA, and get an auto-admit to Honors. Although only the top 2% of applicants get auto admitted, do you guys think I have a chance?

Apply for the FF, it is definitely worth the extra trouble. I think that applying helped my son get auto-admitted (our Valedictorian didn’t apply and wasn’t auto-admitted) and he was also picked for the Presidential.
He has also gotten some amazing teachers in his honors’ classes, so that is a huge benefit.

Thanks helpful, that was very useful info! Wasn’t planning on applying, but I definitely will now.

Just got June SAT scores! Now have a superscored 1550/2280. Does this help my auto admittance chances for Honors? Assuming I get into UGA EA

Congrats!! Yes, it does.

Are you thinking of applying for the Foundation Fellowship too?

ud951, your chances for EA and Honors seem very good indeed. The last of the 3 elements for EA you have not mentioned is course rigor in HS. If you have taken a solid number of AP and honors courses, you should be fine, assuming the general rep of your school for rigor is good with the admissions folks.

Thank you guys! Getting into Honors is really a big deal for me. I check this thread every day lol.

Merkur, I used to be really worried about my course rigor before junior year, but I think it looks better after this year. Now have taken total of 5 APs, taking 4 more next year and a GT Distance Calc class (like Calc 2 and 3 at Tech). The only worry I have now is being in the top 2% because I would really like to get in without an application. And, I’ve heard stories about UGA being kind of erratic with admissions? As in not accepting more qualified students and accepting lesser qualified ones with lower stats? So it’s never a great chance; unpredictable. I’ve heard this phenomenon has been labeled Tufts Syndrome? I really hope this isn’t true…

@Gibson: I am seriously considering applying for Foundation, but I have been discouraged by the sheer magnitude and low number of the accepted students. Nevertheless, I’ve heard that it also helps with getting an Honors invite because it shows you’re really interested in UGA. Is this true? It sure makes a lot of sense to me, and it’s one of the main reasons I’d apply.

Sorry for so many questions; I just have a lot of questions about the UGA Honors admissions process because it’s my first choice and I know that CC has many useful contributors. Thank you again for any advice/suggestions! It really helps me out a lot.

Full disclosure: my d is a Foundation Fellow.

If you don’t apply …you won’t be considered. If UGA is truly your first choice then spend the time and apply. It is a WONDERFUL program, and someone (26 students this year) is offered it. Be yourself and let that come through in your essays.

I have also heard that some students that aren’t invited to the interview weekend may be offered Presidential or Charter scholarships.

D had just finished her freshman year and is very happy with her choice. Currently, she is traveling Europe with a group of fellows having just finished a Maymester at Oxford.

Exciting times for you. Come back and tell us where you apply!

Update: Just got ACT results back! First time, got a 35!! I’m ecstatic! I think this is better than my superscored 2280, what do you guys think? However, the Honors first year profile on UGA’s website doesn’t have any ACT scores, which leads me to think UGA values SAT over ACT, which kinda sucks because I did better on the ACT. Oh well! Still sending my ACT score to UGA.

Hoping this puts me in the running for auto admission into Honors from EA, but it gets more competitive every year, so you never know.

I am going to be a freshman at UGA in the fall in the honors program. I was auto admitted with mediocre grades but a 35 on the ACT. The program heavily weights standardized test scores for auto admission. I would say you have an excellent chance of immediate acceptance. Congrats on the score and I hope to see you at UGA in a couple years.

Thank you! You applied EA, right? Just sent in your transcript and test scores. I’m pretty sure that’s the only way to get auto admitted, but just wanted to confirm. Also, when exactly did you find out you were auto admitted? As in what month, or even which day would be better

Yea, all you do is apply early action. I found out approximately two weeks after early action decisions came out.

Oh ok. That must have been late December then. I hope I can wait that long
