So, I'm a freshman and I applied for honors and made it. But first quarter I had to drop my math class which counted for honors I guess and that effected me a lot. In my first quarter I didn't make the 3.5 cut-off :(. 2nd Quarter I got priority because I was in a GE cluster, but dropped it after 1st because I didn't want to take it anymore. Now for 3rd Quarter I apparently have priority because of my honors? I was wondering...I want to stay in honors because it gives me priority but what do I have to do? what classes do i have to take and stuff? i don't know the policies and am thinking of meeting with an honors counselor but im too lazy and decided to ask you geniuses here :).

on your my.ucla there will be a link for the honors dept website, which outlines its policies.

brief summary: the 3.5 cutoff is for graduation purposes only (ie, need a 3.5 when you graduate in order to graduate with honors). i am not entirely sure what the yearly audit minimum GPA is, but i think it's 3.2.

you have priority through your GE cluster, AND through college honors. great tip here: you keep your priority until you're officially kicked out of the honors program. they audit once a year (in august), which means you will still have priority when you sign up for next year's fall classes june, even if you don't do your honors minimum requirements for this year.

those requirements are: 3.2 GPA at the end of the year (i think), and 8 honors units. if you had a B or better fall quarter in your GE cluster, that's 5 honors units. if not, you apparently have none, and need to take 8 this spring quarter.

hope that helps! :)

Thanks liyana!

So basically I need to get 8 credits because I got a B- in my cluster...yeah i slacked off way tooo much...im an idiot

so what does every one here recommend i take for spring? i was thinking an honors seminar for 5 units of credit..so that means i need 3 more...is there a way to get honors credit for my courses? or do only some courses get honors credit? and if so..i speak with the professor? HELP!!!

Help? I'd rather watch you suffer than anything else.

^hahahahah i love you too emmeline

can you get honors credit for any of these classes: astro 4, econ 1, classics 30, ethnomusicology 35...do i basically just ask the professor to hook me up?

Hook you up with what? A good TA to give you undeserving good marks and an inflated 1.0 units of honors credit?

hook me up with honors credit you HO

or does every class have honors...THANKS FOR REPLYING WITH SUBSTANTIAL INFORMATION EMMELINE

It depends on the professor or instructor and the quarter it's offered, silly ho.

sorry i couldn't get here sooner etti! you have been subjected to emmeline's tests and trials. i am proud to tell you that you passed. she will now come back and tell you that you failed miserably. do not believe her =P

ok anyway, honors collegium courses will give you 4 (or 5) units. also, look and see if any of your planned classes offer 89 sections (ie, comm studies 10 also has a 1-unit comm studies 89 honors section). if you take that, you get 6 honors units. stats 10 and 89 is another example, but as far as i know only davis does it.

if you don't see that, ask your profs if they will be offering an honors contract. they will generally announce this the first day of class for those interested. typically involves an added hour of either discussion or projects or assignments per week, totally depends on the prof.

go here UCLA Honors Programs Academics for more details ;)

thanks a bunch liyana :)

emmeline <3 u too lol

There is nothing honorable about honors except for "honors" in its course title and an elitism unparalleled to my pretensions.

Um, this is kind of random, but it's on the topic of honors... has anyone ever taken HC 86 (Psychology of Fear) w/ Mazey or HC 56 (Language as a Window to the Mind) w/ Curtiss?

heck yes!
HC 56 was an AMAZING, amazing class and i highly recommend it. curtiss is so knowledgeable about her field, and a very nice person. the workload is decent and it's a great intro to linguistics as well as psychology, both of which are equally interesting in this class.
if i could take it again, i would. curtiss also teaches some upper-div ling classes, but i haven't taken the prereqs so i can't take them sad
however, her class is a great foundation for other linguistics classes, but in my opinion far more interesting (i was inspired to take ling 20 after HC 56 but dropped it out of sheer boredom... curtiss, on the other hand, made it far more relevant and fascinating).

take HC 56! :)

Awesome, thanks liyana

how fast do orientation sessions get filled? is there an EXACT day and time to when they are posted? how do ppl get into orientation so quickly?! i wanna attend spring orientation for continuing students. i'm waitlisted for the rest of the orientations this quarter.

The problem is that people can sign up for as many as orientations as they please.
My suggestion: just go to one of the orientations. They have plenty of empty seats and no one will care whether or not you are on the list. That's what I did after being on the waitlist forever.

during the orientation, i thought they'd be strict in only allowing the students who are registered (not waitlisted)...maybe it's more strict nowadays? uchem, when did you go?

if you stay in a ge cluster for the entire year, do you get 8 honors credits?

I believe you get 15?
