Hook factor???

I'm a sophomore in high school right now and am wondering what EC's and/or community things i should do, that would look good on college app? I want to do something that would stand out, but i'm not sure what to do! Im also from new york, if that helps.

I think that a hook isn't exactly an EC. Hooks are things like if you are a recruited athlete, URM, extremely low parent income, legacy case, child of politician, celebrity, cured cancer etc.

As far as ECs go, I don't think that there is any school-related EC that Harvard has not seen. What I am sure Harvard likes to see is dedication in ECs you really enjoy versus a laundry list of your school's club offerings.

There is a little more information on the Harvard FAQ.

Independent research that gets published might stand out...a little, at least...the truth is, with 27,000+ applicants, standing out can be hard.

Make sure you do well on your essays and really let your voice shine through, since your essays will most likely be the only things totally unique to you.

Like kayheart said, show depth, not breadth (to a degree) in your ECs. Take any leadership positions that you can and hope for the best. Your early dedication to getting into Harvard is admirable, and having all those years of high school ahead of you should work to your advantage. Good luck!
