Alright so I just found out today that a poem I wrote is being published in an anthology. How big of a hook is this? I am also editor-in-chief of my school literary magazine if that makes a difference. I am aware that this is a good thing but could it really be the difference in getting into colleges?

It depends what kind of anthology. There's tons of companies out there that rake in money from publishing practically any kid's poem in an anthology, and inducing the proud parents to buy their child's "published" work. However, if it's more of a legitimately published poem that shows true talent, it could be a very good thing in showing passion that backs up your editor position. But I don't know if that fact alone will make any sort of a big difference in admissions.

It's no hook at all. It's a nice EC but not a hook. And EC is something that you do. A hook is something that you ARE (that is of benefit to the school).

ECs: Music, writing, art, dance, community service, clubs, church, etc.

Hooks: URM, child of someone rich or famous, legacy, 7 feet tall, etc.

I disagree, I think a hook is something that makes you unique and lets you stand out no matter what it is. Its not as if the adcoms look at your application and say "o, he is the number one writer in the whole country but that is not a hook so we won't let him in." Before you attack me, I am not saying I am the number one writer in the country.

but its just one. come on. thats no hook. If you had 10 poems published in like 5 PRESTIGIOUS magazines or anthologies, then yes, thats a hook.

No, if you are the number one author in the country, they will love it. It is a great EC. But it is not a hook. A hook is a hook. It is not an EC. As coureur said, a hook is something that you are. Most people don't have hooks, simply by virtue that a hook is something rare, and if everyone had them, no one would care. Anyhow, we've had numerous hook discussions... but being published is a nice affirmation and ec, but no hook.
