Is there such a thing as an extracurricular that is so outstanding, it has the same boost on college admission chances as say being a recruited athlete or URM? I'm asking because I'm rather worried about my current slate of extracurriculars as most are very common and lack "leadership" positions; i.e. knowledge bowl, playing musical instruments, FBLA (made it to nationals though), Library tech tutor, Track, etc.). I have only ONE EC that I personally believe to be unique and I am banking on it. In short, I currently own my own tech consulting business (officially licensed on a state and local level) that has been rather successful (rakes in tens of thousands of dollars in profits annually and currently has active service contracts with seven small businesses). I have operated this company for 2 years now and plan to continue doing so through the rest of high school (4-5 years total). Assuming that I were fine on the Academic side of things (3.97+ UW GPA in the hardest classes, 2300+ SAT, and Top Ten class rank in a good public school), would I stand a decent chance of admission to top schools, particularly Columbia and Harvard? Would my ONE fairly special EC help my chances significantly? Thanks.

Well anyone with a 23++, top 10, and 3.97+ UW gpa has a fair running chance.

It’ll definitely help, but even if it does nothing’s for sure.

TIP: No walls of text please.

Thanks XinzeLi! Anyone else? Please?

Yeah no walls of text por favor,
and yeah sure I mean it COULD apply, for example the lead attorney for a national winning team or an USAMO winner or so on

More feedback please? Specifically, would the EC of owning and operating your own business count for anything much in terms of admissions at top colleges (ie the Ivies)?

I don’t think anyone can answer that question. Present it in the best possible light in your application. Your other stats are good. Honestly, a tech business is not hugely unusual, but it is a pretty good EC. Beats being the school newspaper editor (no offense to the editors out there, just that that is not a unique EC at all). So put in your application, and don’t worry about what strangers on the internet have to say about it.

Of course, make sure you also are working on your apps to matches and a safety or two that you could be happy to attend. Because the statistical odds say you will end up at one of those, so don’t skimp on that effort.
