Hook, Line, and Stinker.

Are my “hooks” studs or duds?

I manage the finances of an environmental organization that deals with hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Its sponsored by the government, the school board and airline companies in regards of carbon offsetting.

I am a Canadian URM (Filipino) applying for HYP & etc.

Eh, they seem fine to me.

They're certainly quite impressive, especially #1. Of course, it's still a toss-up. That won't change.

Thanks etselec

Anyone else?

Well, those are great, but I don't think they're really hooks. A hook is like URM, Olympiad member, legacy, developmental admit, athletic recruit, and so on.

What is a developmental admit?

Is Mensa, or the Gifted Program a hook?

No, it is a student who is admitted because his parents/ relatives are huge $$ donors to the college.

"Is Mensa, or the Gifted Program a hook?"

LOL. Everyone in HYP could probably qualify for Mensa. I think that all you need for Mensa is a 135 IQ.

They are great ECs, but not "hooks," IMO. You should probably emphasize them, regardless.

The point isn't to try to find a hook in your application. If you need to ask "Is _____ a hook?", it's probably not a hook (unless you're pretty clueless...) Typically, if you have a hook, you'll already know. In any case, plenty of people get admitted to HYPMS without any genuine hook.
