I didn't this could count as an ec but yea... I basically help out local bands by running light at local concerts, and booking them shows, free of charge, ofcourse. These are basically 14-17 year olds with incredible talent, but everyone how hard it is to make it big as a musican. I do this for several bands in my area; should i expand on this in an essay or stick to the standard bs? Hook or no hook?

Not a hook. Hooks are something that makes the college feel like they NEED you to go there.

you can expand in your essay, unless you have something better. Not a hook - sorry.

lol i guess i didnt know what exactly a hook was sorry xP
god i feel stupid

but would it make me stand out (atleast slightly)?

It depends on what schools you are applying to. If you are looking to get into a moderately selective Liberal Arts School I think it could be a hook. If you expand on the lighting design and leadership aspects. For a top 10 or ultra selective school this probably isn’t the “hook” they are looking for.

EC =/= hook.

A hook, at this point, is out of your control unless you’re a URM, legacy, or recruited athlete. ECs are not hooks, unless you’re a recruited athlete. Hook gets thrown around all too much on this site.

However, (almost) anything can be a compelling EC when presented the right way. If this project has had a significant impact on you and demonstrates positive aspects of your personality (leadership, time management, your interest in music), then you should expound upon this in your essays.
