I am 100% Romanian, however I was born here. My parents did not go to college, and only one finished high school. Is the Romanian heritage a hook or anything, at Harvard or any other top college? Thanks

I’m not sure on the Romanian heritage (I’d say probably not), but first generation is definitely a hook. Good luck.

Yeah, I thought the first generation might help. I just thought that Harvard probably gets extremely few 100% Romanian-American applications, and my stats are decent enough for a shot I think, so I did not know if it would make me unique or stand out. Thanks though.

Romanian-American is caucasian. No boost except for the college part.

So someone from Asia in his teens (beginning of high school) is considered a hook?

Nope, most Asians are considered to be over represented minorities.

Don’t just apply to Harvard. The first generation to attend college is a hook anywhere.

Yeah, definitely apply to several other colleges (including a few safeties, and a few good/decent shots in addition to the ridiculously hard schools like Harvard, ivies, Swarthmore, etc.)

Haha yeah, I am obviously not applying solely Harvard. That would require extreme courage, maybe even insanity to a certain degree. Do you guys know what top schools value first generation status more-so than others?

No, but if indeed you think your heritage has significantly shaped you then perhaps you could write an essay about it. Then it could be a tip/hookish anywhere.

That’s coincidentally exactly what I planned to do Ace, since I figure there aren’t too many Romanians walking around. The fact is that my heritage has made me unique and changed my view, so that’s a strong possibility for an essay topic.

Very nice. Make sure to make your application a story. Every component should swirl together to make you seem compelling.

Harvard likes unique people. Your heritage can be one part of that.

Yeah, I definitely think that I can make it work. Thanks for the input.
