<p>Is being “gay” and showing active participation in the LGBT community necessarily a hook?</p>
<p>Living abroad is not a hook, and being gay is not a hook. </p>
<p>The reason being gay isn’t a hook, despite it being outside of your control, is that colleges don’t report how many gay students they have, whereas URMs and geographical representation are reported to help the college’s image. Since there’s no question on the application that asks for sexual orientation, it’s not a hook.</p>
<p>Also you could fake being gay, and then suddenly colleges will see hoards of gay applicants if it was a hook hahaha</p>
