Hey,
First time poster, and had a question about the importance of a hook. How important is it, and how much can it compensate for. If your hook is a partial explanation to why your GPA is not as high, or SATs, - is it possible they would look over it?

My hook is that I have been acting professionally for 8 years. Ive been on Broadway 4 times, and worked on many commercials and Video Games (Max Payne & others). It did however interfere with my schooling, as I needed private tutoring (Which is far inferior to having a teacher)

My two dream schools are NYU or Penn- but I'm realistic. I was just wondering If anyone had any insight on the weight of such a hook.

--Ps. I want to go either Business or Econ major (And have many EC's to support, as well as Founder of Start-up with a few thousand in profits)

Some people use the word "hook" to mean a major bump from being a URM (under-represented minority), legacy, recruited athlete, development case ($), or VIP. Other people use "hook" to mean a strong EC.

Being on Broadway 4 times is an exceptional EC (extracurricular). How were you on Broadway 4 times? Is this like four different plays? How old were you? Any leads? Don't go into too much detail in answering this or else you might be identifiable. This sounds like a exceptional EC that would be as strong as any hook.

Colleges first look at difficulty of curriculum, then gpa/rank and then standardized test scores. Once you qualify on those measures, they look at EC's, essays, and recs. They want well rounded freshman classes, but not well rounded freshmen. The more unique an applicant is, the better it is for them. (Public universities are more numbers driven.)

Thanks, I defiantly intend to.
As to my comment about the tutors- It was that I missed out on all class lessons, and was responsible for material in the text books. This often meant not being taught specific math concepts or missing science labs due to the traveling.

Well I am an URM, and legacy at NYU
With 4 different shows starting from 8 years old till the present. 1 lead, and 2 second tier billings.
But yea- I'm hoping those two will come through.

My SATs are strong, but my GPA is weak, on the scale for an Ivy. Just hoping I can fix it- since I'm a junior.
- Thanks for the posts

I worked on #2- if you ever watch the TV screens they have all different shows on I worked on 3 different ones of them. On the credits im under Captn Baseball Bat Boy
(As for giving myself away- its a stage name so ..yea)

It sounds as if you have two very strong "hooks" (URM and VIP) along with stellar EC's. I was trying to think of somebody who is a VIP without stellar EC's, and I came up with Paris Hilton.

You should be careful what you post. There are not that many high school age people on Broadway and it might be possible to put a name with your id.
