Does Being The Only Person To Apply In My School A Hook

I wouldn't say it's a hook persay. But, I would definitely say that it might help you for the fact that they have no other to compare you to--and therefore, you may seem more outstanding! A little plus, maybe.

no.............

Eh? No (10 char)

Given the number of high schools in the US and the number of people who apply to MIT, I would assume that many, if not most, applicants to MIT are the only students to apply from their high schools.

No.

People really need a better understanding of "hook".

Agreed, Jessie.

For the record, I don't believe in "hooks", at least not they way they seem to be defined here.

OP: I don't care what the others say, being the only person in your school to apply to MIT does in fact give you a distinct advantage over the other students in your school when it comes to getting into MIT.

@yayverily: LOL. I agree 100%.

"OP: I don't care what the others say, being the only person in your school to apply to MIT does in fact give you a distinct advantage over the other students **in your school **when it comes to getting into MIT."

LOL. Um...Yeah, I guess being the only person in your school applying to MIT gives you an advantage over others in your school. After all, none of these people are applying to MIT so you must have a much better chance of being admitted than them.

I believe in the possibility of an MIT hook (namely, something that makes the school WANT you, independent of the rest of your app). I just think it is much, much rarer than people seem to believe.

I think I personally know one MIT student (now alum, he was my year) who had what I think could be described as a hook. By age 16, he had published two major mathematical papers - one improving on a famous Erdos paper, and one resolving and extending an open conjecture of two famous number theorists (I am getting this from Wikipedia; he doesn't go around talking about it).

That might be a hook.

Being the only applicant from your school is not.
