Chemistry just found me-- I stumbled on water purification as a topic for my IB extended essay, and now I'm going to intern as a research assistant at the Mumbai University Institute of Chemical Technology, which is REALLY prestigious for chemical research in India, again on water purification.

I also plan on doing some more original research, and I've already started, hopefully publish a paper.

Thing is, I want to apply to MIT/Caltech/and other such Ivies (especially MIT) and I have a bunch of other ECs (all laundry listed). If I take this up (which I will gladly) there go hours of my time. Will it be enough of a Science EC to get me into MIT?

I make all the other requirements… Great SATs, Academics (IB–40+/42) and Social Work. And I really want to do this. It’s just that allllll the other ECs are killing me.
And I also have robotics as an EC-- I’m participating in the Indian Robotics Olympiad this August.

Yes to an extent.

What are your test scores?

Ivy Leagues want a well rounded application. A stong EC won’t make up for a bad SAT score and vice versa.

SAT I: 2350
Waiting on my SAT IIs but I’m doing Physics, Chem and Math and I expect 750-800s

With your test scores, if you really make something good out of your research, then you have an excellent chance at ALL schools. Don’t worry about other ECs; having one very strong and passionate EC is much better than having various generic ECs which you might have very little interest in.

:) thanks!
i’ve also heard that colleges give extra credit to female students applying for science majors-- true?

i dono about ‘extra credit’, but they do have a need for females in the sciences. don’t worry, just dont screw up and you’re pretty set

do you need financial aid? if so, then your chances decrease a LOT

Most probably not…
People have told me that it’s nigh impossible, but I do have more to my ECs and my transcript of course, not enough to consider applying for aid though.
I’m also a US citizen living abroad… So I’m not applying as an International Student… does that help?

^^^idk. how is internation applicant status determined? isn’t it your h.s?
