Hook'em Horns

Just thought I'd be the first.

haha !
so you applying to UT???
what are you gonna major in?
have you done your essays?

I'm a mom. My D will be applying to UTAustin. She's currently working on her essays. And she's undecided as to major. She'd like to try for Plan II. But it's really hard to get into. How 'bout you?

hey mom!
well i am currently working on my essays too!
i am planning on majoring in Architecture. My godmother is an architect. She attended ND (which i dont think i will get into) and she said UT has one of the best programs in Architecture. So how many essays does your D have to do? Where else is she applying?

She has just completed her third and last essay for the Plan II admission. Her english teacher is going to take a look at it for any needed revisions.

I have also heard great things about the Architecture school at UT. Good luck, I hope you get in. Do you know if you plan to live on or off campus? What other schools are you trying for?

My D is still finalizing her list, but as far as Texas schools she's looking at Baylor, Rice, Southwestern, TCU, and Trinity. She can't decide whether to try for any "big name" schools up east or not. How 'bout you?

Okay, we just visited UTAustin this weekend. D liked it. Yes it is huge, but you get such a neat sense of lots of stuff going on and lots to do. The campus is old and pretty. There was an outdoor fashion show on the side steps of the main building, numerous booths set up with students giving out flyers to whatever activity they were involved in, some guy on the corner yelling out his political views over a loudspeaker, the cuisine club cooking some sort of panini sandwiches to raise money on another corner. The buildings around the outskirts of campus had some truly beautiful art work on their exteriors and there was a neat little outdoor bazaar set up right acoss the street from campus. Restaurants in the immediate area represented many different countries.

I loved it and would go there in a heartbeat. Waiting to see what d likes....

The plan II office was rather cosy and the staff friendly. They have a little set of rooms, one with some comfy chairs, one with about 8 computers and lots of copies of past thesis from plan II students. Students came and went the whole time we were there, some just to get cookies from the cookie jar. Other plopped down and talked about classes or whatever.

D attended a world lit class where they discussed Antigone, which happens to be what they are studying in her Humanities class right now so she was very positive about the whole experience. Whether or not her stats are good enough to get in to plan II remains to be seen.

But she's already been accepted to UT Liberal Arts. So we now have a definite safety school. I hear that if you are in honors then the campus seems a little smaller because you often find yourself in small classes with the same people.

Does UT have rolling admissions? Was your D top 10%? We are Texas residents but my son goes to boarding school outside of Texas, so he won't qualify for top 10%. He is a current junior. We, too, would be interested in Plan II. Thanks. Karen

Visit the "bealonghorn.com" website and search for plan II. Or you can visit UTexas.edu They'll tell you all you need to know including stats for current plan II students. I think the average SAT score is 1450, they place a lot of emphasis on the essays and they recommend that you have already taken calculus. So far she has only been admitted into the liberal arts, she still has more paperwork to go for the PlanII program.

Yes, d was top 10%. I guess they must have rolling admissions cuz she's already admitted. I never really thought about it.

If she doesn't get into plan II then she'll probably end up going somewhere else. She really did like the Plan II aspect of UT a great deal. But she has also been admitted to Baylor and they're offering more merit aid.
