Whereas an HBCU very heavily recruited my daughter interested in engineering because the school wanted Jewish, Caucasian women in the engineering program. They were throwing a full ride at her and made it very interesting for sure.
CC posters are quick to differentiate between hooks, spikes, and the resume of an average excellent student. However, many in my larger circles conflate the accomplishments of an average excellent student with having a hook. (A friend of my parents thinks their granddaughter has an Ivy League hook because she volunteered on a political campaign.)
I’ve also noticed that people who are a bit older or have kids who aren’t in high school yet don’t know understand how high the bar has risen for high school students. Nowadays an average excellent student may have leadership roles in multiple extracurriculars and compete at the regional or state level in various academic competitions. This is way beyond what most GenX high school students were doing.
Totally get your point and agree with it.
What I love about the college process, however, is the few people who accomplish something special and write about it so well that they compete head-on with the hooks. Nothing better IMO.
